Newcomer / Intro Rail guns with super penetrator

I wonder why the super penetrator trait doesn't seem to make any effect on NPC ships, no damage to internal modules noticed. I use dual medium rails, short range grade 3, with this trait . Good aim, shooting from short distance, the hull dies faster than the module. Is it a bug or what?

No, super pen rails are not known to be bugged. Unless you can post a video to show what you are doing and the results you get, it will be very hard for anyone here to say more than that.

Not a bug, just from short distance it is extremely hard to snipe a module. It is not enough to hit the targeting rectangle, you need to hit absolutely spot on, using the micro gimballing feature. It works best on medium to long distances. I would therefore rather suggest the long range mod.

When you are on the targeted module, closely watch the tiny dots that indicate the point where they will strike. You will eventually see one of them making a tiny movement when it locks on the module. Only if you manage to make it fire at that precious moment, it will hit the module. And wreck it with a few shots - rail guns are extremely devastating weapons if mastered right. You will also notice that only one of your guns will ever hit the module, 'cause even at a distance the micro gimbal is not able to direct them all at the same spot.

Good Lord.... Are you serious, not taking the mickey???? runs to check whether there are videos about that...

You don’t have to be an FA off ninja to make use of fixed weapons, so don’t overlook them just because you haven’t mastered flying FA off.

Pip management, boosting, and frequent throttle adjusment goes a long way. Toggling FA on and off is sometimes better anyway.

Full FA off isn’t often necessary against NPCs.

okey dokey.... I'll have a look, but ulitmately, I really want to fly like Insonia, go open play and annoy the heck out of a bunch of gankers. rofl

I totally did not expect that the rail is a sniper weapon. I had those rotating barrels on my mind that blast away many rounds in short amount of time.

Get a Krait.
Three AX turrets on top, 2 railguns.
Go shoot Thargoid Scouts.
Good practice for railguns.
Even if you're rubbish, the AX turrets will still get the kill.

Due to the paucity of weapon choice in the noob-zone I had a play with railguns in a Viper and can only say that I am still completely rubbish with fixed weapons. The problem with rails (and PAs of course) is the delay in firing, the charging-time, so by the time the weapon fires the target is already moving out of the fixed weapon path ('cos I am rubbish).

(I resorted to frags.... ;) )

Another thing to keep in mind, is you don’t have to be an ace to get into PvP. While some people catch on faster than others, nobody can just git gud without getting out there and getting some experience.

Go shoot at those gankers, man. Hell, shoot at the police, too. Shoot at everyone.

100 million credits = A vulture and about 70 rebuys lol. You’ll probably blow up a lot, but that just a part of the learning process.

I use Super Penetrator more for the thermal reduction than the chance to hit multiple modules, though like Craith I have a pair on my Eagle, which does allow me to get aft shots on larger ships like Anacondas. If you can line up those aft shots on long ships, then the odds of hitting multiple modules goes up.

The same applies to shooting them in the face :devilish:

FA off in my opinion is of little use for module sniping unless you need to reverski.

... so by the time the weapon fires the target is already moving out of the fixed weapon path ...
That's why rails are so good at larger distances. They don't lose punch up to their max range, and the target's angular speed is much lower.

Seems you were thinking of Multicannons. They fire projectiles. Machine guns, basically. They can also be quite powerful, myself I never came to like them much.

Frag guns are extremely powerful weapons as well provided they are fired at close range. Close like in, very close. I like them because they challenge your flying more than your aim - which does not necessarily mean the challenge is a smaller one ;)

I don't know whether somebody mentioned this (I only skimmed the replies, apologies), but when you are sniping a module with rails, you have to pay close attention to how the target ship is oriented. It is very much possible to hit the module THROUGH the ship if it is on the other side, but in that case the hull takes a big chunk of damage.
I'd even go as far as to say the super penetrator is actually BAD when you are just trying to snipe modules with as little collateral hull damage as possible, because it shoots clean through the whole ship more often.

Yep, that is challenging, but my wild guess is, once you get the hang of it, you have that delay build into your muscle reaction as well.

A year more or less into it, a week or two into my first vette, nevertheless, just scratching the surface of what's possible in that time stealing game that causes ladylove to look at me at times as if I am....__ you know what I mean. LOL.... When she looks at the game play ince in a while, and asks a question, the answer makes her like.... ....REALLY NOW?..... (in a friendly but This is just ridiculous way) me coming from science and arts.... well there is a side of me you did not know yet honey... har har har :)
