Rail Guns

They are pretty devastating though which is why their ammo is limited. I've just switched to cannons for more ammo and enjoying it. Harder to aim though

Given enough practice it is very easy to hit any target with them achieving great hit accuracy. Given that they hit, where you aim, thus provide sniping accuracy and significant damage they have enough advantages. So mostly they should be used as support weapons and they do excellent job in this.

They need a bigger ammo pool of say 50 rather than 30. They are pretty difficult to aim with and their ammo should reflect this.

Just out of curiosity, what Class and Rating are you using? I've started using Rail Guns recently and I'm wondering what others think about them. So far I've found out they're dang expensive to re-arm.

I find they are just far too unreliable and expensive to run as a realistically viable weapon.
That and the fact that fighting smaller ships just becomes a hideous experience most of the time.

Good for dealing with the larger ones though.

I couple them in the same fire group as my fixed beams. I burst the beams with the charge noise nearly firing and let them go when the beam is staying center mass of the target or subtarget. pew pew

Rails are the only ammo limited weapon currently where the limit makes sense, they are extremely powerful (oh and torpedos)

I find the firing delay makes them impossible for me to aim and hit. (I realize I may be in the minority here.)

They require a different style of aiming, it's the same difference between, say, sniper rifles and the railgun in battlefield 4. With a delayed projectile you have to lead your shot to hit a moving target, with a shot that impacts as soon as it charges you have to follow your target while it's charging. Smooth, small motions are the way to go. Try practising just keeping your gunsights pointed directly at another (uncooperative) ship for a while, you'll get the hang of it.

I'm currently packing two C2 railguns on a viper with an A3 power core. Still, those are a nightmare to feed. Had to raise deactivation priority in some modules and can only pack a pair of gimballed pulse lasers just for the sake of shield tearing. Then, there's ammo. I think about this sometimes too and despite C2 railguns are the big instantaneous cousins of plasma accelerators the ammo disparity between these two is just too dumb, even considering the fact that you'll have a harder time placing your slow plasma shots over a maneuverable target.

Super true, though i'm curious to know how key+mouse players fare with rails.

x2 C2 rail guns and x4 C1 Bursts on my Asp. Cobra's and anything larger die pretty quick with this loadout.

I can hit them but it's so frustrating when you miss.

There are small and medium size fixed rail guns.

Practice sorts that out as you get used to this delay, moreover, this delay can even be used to your advantage.

Well, you can assign 1 or 2 rail guns with a good convergence to a fire group to deal with small ships and they are basically doomed.

Sorry but I absolutely do not get how come they be unreliable. We could have spoken about their reliability if they would malfunction quite often but this does not happen.

Rails r tricky. Ther fixd only, xpensive reload and charge time before firing...no ONE perfect weapon in ED.

If you increased ammo you'd need to make it less expensive a shot. Rails are hideously expensive to operate.

Rails are not expensive to operate, one shot costs 200Cr only (it was almost 500Cr in Gamma and probably 1.00-1.07). Rails are ideal weapons for sniping modules, e.g. you can destroy Anacondas power plant with medium sized rail guns, while it still has 70% of its hull remaining. But again I would not advise using only rail gun configuration, use them as support weapons.

Moreover, as rail guns use slugs now they do not affect the cooling system for other energy weapons such as lasers (which allows you to use them as primary weapons). Just watch out for the heat generation of your ship while using rails and energy weapons configuration.

I had a pair on my viper and I was getting quite good with them before upgrading to a Vulture. I'd really love a large rail gun, though...I do miss the "reach out and TOUCH someone" feel of those babies.

I really like rails but they don't really work on the ships I like to fly.
I prefer plasmas because of the ammo count.
Guess I've played too many survival / simulator games that ammo count really bothers me.
