Railguns are *fantastic*

OK, sure you have to watch the heat and ammo, but there is something really amazing about watching just a few shots completely wipe out enemy shields.....and those are the 2B rated variety. As a big user of Multicannons though, I really do need to change my tactics a bit.....like making doubly sure a ship is in my crosshairs before letting loose a volley.

It has certainly worked wonders during the current Community Goal!

Yeah, rails are hilarious...and a great way to force yourself to learn fixed weapons. I run a railwinder for that...its hilarious to use for assassin missions against large ships!

Mine is a Vulture.....she's a total *beast*. First time in 18 months that I have ever "progressed" past a Cobra MkIII......quite the experience.

Personally I don't like 'em much, but that's probably because I haven't built out a railwinder like Tiger's and put in the time with it. I did my "fixed weapons" training with beam lasers, they are great for teaching trigger discipline, you treat them like a current-day automatic weapon with a high cyclic rate, where it's essential to fire controlled targeted bursts rather than just spray-and-pray. I think I'm going to have to do that railwinder thing just to fill out that skill set.

I uswd to fly my Python with 5 x Rail Guns for PvP. Was super fun.

But it was hard to kill a CMDR as it was most.likely that I ran out of ammo.

Gonna put 8 Rail Guns on my Conda. Just for the fun of it.

I remember waaaaaaaaay back in beta meeting a CMDR in a Cobra using a 4x Rail setup, against my Multi/Laser gimballed Cobra. Boy that was a painful lesson. To this day ships using rails give me the creeps.

Plasma Accelerators are more satisfying imo. Not saying rails are boring, but watching big red ball of plasma fly to yout target and hit it with Paf, it is just way too good.

Nothing beats the satisfaction of taking down a Conda's shield, targeting the powerplant, landing 2 huge plasma shots on the powerplant (at the same time) and watching the entire ship get instantly destroyed.

You might want to reconsider that. The primary strength of the Vulture are the large hardpoints, and with rails you nullify that. If you want to make a railboat, try a DBS or Asp Scout. The four hardpoints are located perfectly for rails, you'll do 50% more damage than the vulture (!), they are both as agile and the DBS is even way faster than the Vulture. Plus, they are both cheaper. :)

With an engineers' experimental effect you can get 'unlimited' ammo, where the slugs use your fuel as ammo. Very satisfying.

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks, +1!

It's the plasma slug experimental effect, iirc. Maybe not so good on smaller ships with limited fuel tanks as it is, but it's almost pleasurable in the Clipper/Cutter.

Yeah, just checked Inara. Gonna give it a try, you can always add a fuel tank as a ammo-cache. :D

Yes, but now, you can get that special mod that makes them run off your fuel tank. Just make sure you don't run out of fuel mid battle I guess :)

Aww ninja'd

Railguns have helped me learn fixed weapons, to the point I used fixed wherever it makes sense.

Only hardpoints I have not using them are the smalls on my Cobra Mk III.

Before 2.1 (and its infinite rail ammo) dropped, I had all sorts of fun in my beam + pulse + bi-weave Vulture fighting CMDRs with rail setups. It was really just "dodge-dodge-dodge" while counting their shots, and then they'd always whine about having run out of ammo...so I'd just rip through their shields and chase them all the way back to the station.

I had quite a few combat logs from SDC folk that way, as I recall.
