Railguns balancing

Anyone using them?

I tried yesterday, 2x Class 1. After firing all 62 shots (almost all on target), I destroyed few wanted ships for a ~8k reward. Ammo cost 12400 cr. Come on, this is useless. Damage is low too. Only thing that was improved is the charge time.

Class 1's are not that good anyway, regardless of which weapon system your using. They get better with bigger sizes.
Do not use a powerful gun to kill a small reward enemy.
Use lazers to get rid of the shields first. Thermals are always better for shields, projectiles better for hull unless they have the correct plating.

It's useless? Because you killed things with a weapon, but didn't profit from it? How is that useless? Guns are for killing stuff, not for earning money. You can still profit though.
I suggest using lasers if you primarily care about profits.

I wasn't clear with my post :)
Of course I use laser (beams) for shields etc, this was just casual test. Still I think damage vs hull is low compared to cost and ammo count.

Railguns are primarily used, afaik, to take out specific systems when subtargetting. Next time target his power plant?

What MarrV says. Railguns a specialist secondary weapon use to do huge chunks of damage to specific subsystems. Use them sparingly. A good use of them is getting behind a cobra and laying into his drives.

How do you even manage to hit a target that small with the railguns only coming as fixed and taking an awkward "charge" delay before firing? If not for that delay before it actually fired, I'd like them a lot more.

Hence the "specialist" part. Rail guns are VERY hard to use effectively. I can land shots on the thrusters and cargo hatches of most ships though and that's what matters.

Rail guns can destroy ship systems very quickly. So they would be better suited at going up against big ships like Anacondas and Type 9 sizes. And then to take out their power plants and drives.
