Railguns on a Vulture...

... without heatsink, or how to deepfry both your modules AND yourself...

Any way to deal with that? I decided to go for Rails instead of MCs or PAs on my trusty Vulture, but she can't take the heat and I doubt one heatsink will do the trick and I don't wanna go for hulltank or take off my SBs...

Halp :D

I mean, you can engineer them for lower heat generation, but they are still railguns, and a shielded Vulture is not a cool running ship to begin with. Options are limited if you don't want to use heatsinks or grind to engineer your entire ship for low heat.

so no way to get around changing the whole setup I am running on if I wanna use Rails? damn... If not for the heat generation, those things are really fun to use x)

Yeah, they are fun, but like you I usually end up swapping them out when they get too hot to handle without very careful build planning. I mostly use them in throwaway slots on large ships that can handle the heat easier, like the 2 small hardpoints on the anaconda, to disrupt shield cell banks. I haven't used them as primary weapons in a long time.

How about a Viper with 2 rails and 2 supporting weps? IMO the Vulture isn't ideal (other than the dank hardpoint placement), because you kinda gimp yourself by putting 2 medium weapons in a ship with 2 large hardpoints.

AFAIK the Viper doesn't really have many issues with heat. I haven't tried it myself though.

The whole point is, I don't wanna change my ship x)
But ye, I might need to play a bit more with the engineers... I am trying to lower the heat on the rails first. let's see what gives.

Thanks for the advices tho.

I'm pretty sure the feedback cascade and super penetrator special effects also reduce heat by 40%. I'm not sure if any of the other sfx does though (not that any of the other ones are worth it IMO).

Plasma slug, feedback cascade or a sturdy mount does lower heat of rails. Nothing else.

But I really do not see the reason. If all you want to do is to kill PPs of the big ships, then maybe. By themselves rails are not effective for hull damage. You will waste like 10x2 shots to kill one Viper.

They are sure fun though. I use 4x size one G4 Lightweight plasma slug rails on my current Conda to pretty much spam them with 7A distibutor (cause of the mass reasons).

oh boy... It's still a legacy upgrade... but overcharged and IIRC a pretty hot one too... :D

Can you power everything with ~17.47 MW? If so, try G5 Armored. With the Thermal Spread special on top of the efficiency gains, I can fuel scoop at the maximum rate in a Vulture and not overheat. That should give you some extra thermal headroom for the railguns - again, if you can power everything (or at least power off everything except the Shields, Thrusters and Guns :p).

Sturdy mount for the Railguns + Plasma slug, Super Penetrator and Feedback Cascade will further reduce your Railgun's Thermal Load. (Those three specials all carry a -40% Thermal Load reduction... ON TOP OF the Sturdy Mount thermal bonuses).

And now I want to try a full Railgun Vulture... darn it! I was just finishing up the dual Efficient Thermal Vent Beam build!

nah, can't power everything with only 17-18MW. I'm at 21 or something and still need to shut down FSD and scoop (hatch is optional, but I turn it off too)

I kind of rushed the upgrades prior to beyond release... (bad Hellfire...) but I already started to convert to new system and already get some nice results.

guess I will try to re-do my engineer upgrades and set everything to new standards.

And ye, dual Rail Vulture is kinda brutal... almost took down an Elite wing mission target along with the terrorist escort ships if I didn't start to glow red and melt my modules xD

What is your current heat efficiency?
I bet a new power plant would be fine.
Also use current rails with super pen or feedback.

Edit: I just happened to be right by my Vulture.
With current G5 charge enhanced PD/super conduits, current G5 PP/no experimental, 2 pips to wep, and current G5 LR feedback rails, I could fire as fast as they'd reload and could not get it to overheat.

If your legacy PP has bad heat efficiency I would reroll that bad boy (or roll a new one) ASAP, that would help a lot of your issues. As you probably are already aware, only roll it up to the grade you need it as each grade runs hotter than the lower ones.

Not to go off topic here, but... if you have the chance, give the dual Efficient Thermal Vent Beam build a go. I just tested it and.... my God... everything died! EVERYTHING!

...oh and it fixed the Vulture's thermal problems :p

Efficient TLB PA + Short range Feedback Cascade Hammer loadout on a Vulture is pretty effective against SCB spamming large ships.

Does a Vulture get more inelegant than that? Ewww![blah]

Fixed o/c'd autoloader multis are the only way to go for any self-respecting Vulture pilots - anything else is a disgrace to the Vulture Pilots' League! (Yes, I know the abbreviation is a bit *cough* embarrassing!)

Disclaimer: Tongue firmly positioned in cheek...calm down, saddo-dorks! (I know what you lot are like![big grin])

I have a pair of those too, but while I certainly agree with what you had to say about elegance, let me remind you that I was talking about effectiveness. Those wing assassination mission target Cutters have really tough shields and I'm almost always out of synthesis mats. ☺

Yeah...'good point!

"Sandro Magic" FC is indeed the best way to take those Cutters' shields down, then snipe the pp's. Even my G5 pacifiers need synthesis for the wing assass missions (except some of the Condas) & I can't help feel aggrieved when hard earned mats from surface prospecting grinding are necessary just to rearm one's weapons!

I think this hits the nail on the head. The Super penetrator and feedback cascade railgun mods come with a huge heat reduction bonus, I don't think anything else you do to reduce the heat will have such a big impact. Railguns are powerful...but you are gimping your ship with C2 weapons on C3 hardpoints :)
