Raise the number of ppl who can participate in a Wing

Hello Commanders,

With the silent builds running all over the place, I'd like to suggest that FD raises the number of people who can participate in a wing from 4 to I don't really know, lets say 10? 12?

Nowadays, in PVP fights if ppl use silent running builds (which is a bit OP in my opinion) you have a difficulty to know who is your ally and who is not. It's not a problem for 1 wing, but if 2 friendly wings are on the same instance against let's say another 2 wings), things get messy. You just see on radar nice flashy yellow boxes, but you can't tell if it is your friend or your foe. That shall not be a problem if you increase the number of ppl participating in the same wing. And it does expand to normal (without silent running builds) PVP wing fights, since you will notice via the top icon, who is getting attacked and who needs assistance.

Any ideas or other suggestions?

Seconded, how about 6 players per wing? Or let multiple wings join into 1 squadron.

Do you have any idea how p2p instancing works, that level of communication between servers wouldnt be sustainable
Elite isnt a persistant single entity but an instanced segment!

proper made me laugh this thread!

Maybe let's add a special color for people who are in your wing ?

This couldn't be green as you can play as pirate and then authority are you enemies.

Yeah P2P isn't ideal. How come 32 players per instance is possible, not 10 people per wing?

Besides the communication complexity - O(N^2) - the current limit was chosen because it could integrate into the GUI nicely (?). If FD stuck to the same metaphore, you wouldn't be able to see out of the cockpit for HUD elements if they allowed a "big wing". Presumably this was tried and tested during prototyping.

Perhaps a hierarchical approach could be used to group wings into squadrons, and up into fleets? These wouldn't work in the same way as wings - which would retain their behaviour within the hierarchy. Not sure how they would work and where they would be useful though...

The game currently can't even handle 4 members per wing reliably. My clanmates and I are frequently experiencing instancing problems when playing in a wing up to the point of a wing virtually breaking apart and having to be reformed... and we are all in the same country.

It seems 4 members per wing is already stretching the capacities of the instancing mechanics.

The instancing mechanics are flawed but I am sure eventually they can only get better and not worse. The suggestion is to increase the number of wing members, I am sure it will take much time to be implemented, but the question remains, you want that or not ? :)

You must not understand P2P instancing if you think the communication is between servers.

...... understanding p2p instancing is one thing, but if devs want to realise the dream of having fighters deploy from a main ctraft and have all pioleted by players, there going to have to overcome this obstacle at some point.

Just allow players to manually mark other ships as friendly. Use a color other than green. This would allow multiple wings to work together and help avoid friendly fire. No additional communications are necessary as the markings are local to each player and fleet communications can be easily done over teamspeak.

I think I've read somewhere that the fighters will be NPCs.
