Ramming - intended?

So was doing some bounty hunting, and killin this NPC in an ASP, myself in a Viper. Had him down to 50% no shields, I have full shields, he rammed in to me and I isntant died....working as intended???

I had this problem. Then i started to not use the "game on!!! lets play chicken sucker!!!!!" approach to an oncoming ship when dueling haha

Speeds and Mass has a lot to do with the impact damage. The more speed you have, or how flimsy you are compared to what you ran into, affects the formula.

Thus a viper is an unfortunate design: VERY fast, and yet very flimsy. Viper is one of the few ships that can destroy itself by accidentally boosting into a wall.. that was only 3 feet in front of it.

All that performance comes at a price.

Happened again vs a player in cobra, again 100% with full shields to death...this game is stupid lol :)

And nothing happend to him, yes his ship might be bigger but if you want to discuss physics, his ship would be destroyed as well, even if im half size.

No it wouldn't be destroyed, it's a game, its not real nothing to do with RL physics just like dogfights in space.

Yes it is a game, and from a game point of view it is bad design and bad gameplay to have this a legit strategy.

As is dogfighting, as is fake Newtonian physics, as is the reduced brilliance of stars when you are near them, as is being able to come back alive after being destroyed in space, and many, many other things in all games and simulators ever produced. Reality in a game can only go so far or the game becomes wrong. That was my point. This comparing of game mechanics to RL is a pointless and irrelevant exercise.

It's really unlikely that nothing happened to that Cobra. He almost certainly took heavy damage, especially if his shields were already down.

I fly a Viper myself and they honestly aren't that easy to break on a crash unless you hit something truly much larger than yourself (a Transport, an asp/python/conda/dropship, Docking Stations, etc), or unless maybe you've got the stock shield generator and as such a much weaker shield strength. I've clipped unshielded cobras with boost a handful of times, and so far it's never so much as brought down my own shields and have even accidentally killed a damaged cobra that way. Never done one head-on with both ships boosting, but that's the sort of insane jousting situation that you really ought to never be getting into in the first place.

So if it makes you feel any better at least, a crash hard enough to kill you probably dropped a hefty repair bill on that Cobra even if he didn't die outright.

You are the matador in a bull fight. The bull is bigger and can kill you. Therefore you move out of the way. I think its a good mechanic as it adds another variable to consider in a dog fight.

Used this Tactic a Few times to weaken or off an opponent. I didn't get to weaken that drop ship in my asp even though it had no shields. Instead I died.

I felt a little stupid to try ramming the heavier ships. I think you always have to make sure that you are heavier, you have shields and he doesn't, and you are not to fast while ramming.

Working as intended.

When you ram an egg against an anvil, guess what will crack?

Anyway, the AI isn't the smartest, but even if it was, there will be countless situations where ramming will be unavoidable.

When you're flying an egg with lasers, you gotta be carefully and keep your distance.

It depends on system pips as well. (Shield Strength) as well as a whole host of other factors.man upgraded Cobra with full pips in sys could easily kill another cobra without pips in sys with no hull upgrade.

Not the game just your ignorance of the mechanics.

Not intending to be rude it's just a fact.

My Cobra is worth 8,539,286Cr - To put that in perspective, the original cost of my Cobra is only 4.44% of what it costs now. Everything is Grade A [Except sensors, armour and hardpoints]. I rammed into an Asp not long ago and blew him sky high and I didn't even lose a single 'bar' on my shields.

Upgrades make the difference.

Guess game might not be for me, coming form competetive pvp games it just seem stupid. I know it is more a simulator , but imo stupid game mechanics, p2p which already has seen the rise of cheating etc doesnt really bode well for the future. Maybe it is just me, I am sure plenty of people enjoy the game. I was hoping for more serious dog-fighting and wellbalanced/fun pvp with good game mechanics, just not it atm.

Definitely intended ... I had an NPC Python ram me and then message me to state that he'd put an end to the engagement.

I suspect I only survived because I was in a fairly upgraded cobra.
