Ramming Speed

Just a thought...

I tried to place this in design discussions but wouldn't let me post.

In case devs have a shortage of suggestions to implement ( as if )

How about this?

A whole class of ships designed to destroy others by being used as rams.!

I only suggest it as I think it would be relatively easy to implement. Ramp up the destructibility reduce gun points (to balance out ). They could be used as shields by other team mates as well for particularly tough opponents. Pretty much like tanks on the western front in WW1.

Kinetic energy would do short work of the "rammers". - You'd RAM exactly once. The level of kinetic energy generated at 100's of meters per seconds would obliterate whatever material used for the "rams", along with the crews behind those rams.

While things that smash into aircraft can damage them, ever wonder what happened to those things in the process? ;)

The ships as they are would be fairly flimsy I think. If you wanted to build one as a ram it would need to have some solid mass up front to take the brunt of the damage. This mass is going to be..well, massive! It would take a lot of effort to get it moving and would probably not be very manoeuvrable and consequently easy to avoid. Unless you were ramming something as massive as a cruiser but in that case the damage done might not be that great.

Last ditch effort when all else has failed? A coup de gras on an already wrecked enemy when you have full shields and hull?

Obviously all valid points..

At the end of the day I just think it would be interesting.

If we are talking realistically. Hopefully in the future we won't be fighting each other in space but if we are I would expect all engagements would strictly be at long range.

However if we can stick to the present WW1 plane fights in space mechanics (plus newtonian physics) we could make a tactic of ramming as legit.

I also think they could be useful shield ships in group matches for ridiculously well armed cruisers. (even if they can't take out a ship they can protect hords of less well shielded ships at least in the run in to a fight) Or help nurse damaged ships out of sticky situations.

Complete with this soundtrack of course?

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

(How do you embed videos here?)

It's very . . . savage.
@ Memnoch. I think a bested pilots last ditch effort should be hitting the eject button before death and it's consequences. I can't see ramming catching on in Ironman mode.
@ Dalkeith. It would add new tactics and fear and I suppose this is interesting. The only problem is that you'd see the enemy vessel was a 'ramming ship' and just stand off with long range systems.

I can imagine pirates maybe using something for busting open the sides of big, juicy traders but I can't imagine how it'd be healthy for the Rammer either. Fast speed, dead stop. I mean we're not talking about 12knots here.
It's better to have some drone type thing that cuts holes in ship alloy to get to the cargo hold.

Wouldn't an asteroid do most of that?

I did use that tacktick in Elite frontier since the npc was all kamikaze anyway so cud not bother even put on a mounted laser, but in multiplaye i think this option i seriously doubt it will even be considered.

I actually think that the devs have got all the ideas they need ( lets face it the idea bit is easy ) and are best sticking to their own vision. ( guided by DB ) Accepting new mechanics at this time is probably inadvisable I don't think I would be looking to do it if I was a dev at frontier.

Interesting thought experiment though and clearly collisions albeit unintentional will be a factor in combat.

An armada of this style ?

:p

I just tried a small experiment with the Alpha.

Waste Disposal mission.

Maximum power diverted into systems (shields). Boost into nearby asteroid.

Result: Shields down and hull at 54%

Supply Strike mission.

Maximum power diverted into systems (shields). Boost into fully shielded Anaconda.

Result: Shields down, hull at 0%, death follows. Anaconda shields unaffected.

Imagine a battle between two well matched factions both primarily made up of a big tanked cruiser with several smaller fighters. I could see a situation where the cruisers were broadside to each other pummelling each other while the fighters use Newtonian physics to rise up and down from the cover of their respective cruisers to fire off volleys. Kind of like trench warfare in space. One cruiser goes down and unshielded fighters swarm in an effort to make a harder target to hit.

Either that or they make a run for it.

Well seeing two ships spin out of control dose not sound fun and leaves both ships to be easy target.
