Newcomer / Intro Ran out of oxygen with life support and canopy at 100%

I've been playing for hours, I was on my 1st exploration trip several 100 light years away from the bubble, I tried to repair FSD while in super cruise like a moron. After my ship came to 8. I repaired all the models that were only down a few percentages, and somehow I still ran out of oxygen? What gives? If you only have a limited amount of oxygen how do people go across the Galaxy for several weeks at a time without docking? What am I missing?

Yep, you are missing something, o2 isnt an issue for exploration. You can even lose your canopy and still make it to a repair station or FC safe and sound by traveling FAST and using Synthesis to replenish your o2

With a solid canopy, Oxygen supply only goes down automatically when you:
a) Repair Life Support
b) Reboot/Repair
c) Turn off Life Support due to running out of Power or Fuel (probably not the cause)

You have several minutes, a) or b) should not take anywhere near that long

All I can think is that LS turned off to repair, and you didnt turn it back on

Theres a big oxygen supply countdown, dont let it get too low. Act.

E rated life support will work for 5 minutes, D rated for 7.5 minutes the others are better still, life support usage is cumulative and isn’t reset until you dock or synthesise more oxygen.

If your ship is short of power due to turning on something like AMFU it will turn off modules based on the number in the priority column of your modules tab starting with the priority 5 modules so ensure Life Support is in priority 1.

You need to reactivate any units that have been repaired before they will work properly. Sorry, dude, lesson learned.

Just resynth Oxygen - assuming you have materials

Right Panel, Modules, Life Support, Resupply Life Support.
Or
Right Panel, Inventory, Synthesis, Life Support

Just my 2 cents. It's common practice to D-rate your life support to save weight. Don't do it. Install at least a C-rated module because in an emergency every spare minute counts.

And it's easy to lose track of synth materials. Better to have reserves if that happens.

Well, if i'm not mistaken, i've heard about people crossing almost half the galaxy with a broken canopy, resynth-ing O2 every 7.5 minutes of gameplay :)

That's true. Veteran explorers are known to do that in a pinch. But this is the newcomers section so good habits and practices first. Broken canopy rescues are one of the most resource and effort intensive cases that i know of.

I think the Fuel Rats have a special extra long lecture in store for these 😁

Looks like y’all have it figured out what must’ve have happened, one of either two things (both of which have happened to me, though fortunately I noticed before virtual asphyxiation).

Novice to novice, same advice as already given. As I understand it AMFU are unnecessary power draws until you need them, so keep them switched off. If you do need them, unless you’ve bags of excess power your ship may power down other modules, in order of priority which you can set in the module tab; keep essentials such as life support on priority 1, and drop anything situational like SRV bay, limpet controllers, weapons, cargo hatch etc. to lower priorities. You can set several priorities levels, so then the ship will power down the lowest priority modules first leaving life support active.

Finally, and don’t worry because this has happened to me too, if you use your AFMU to repair a module it will power down, and with a couple of exceptions I’ve noticed WILL NOT automatically power them back up. For some reason life support falls into this category, so make sure to reboot it manually after repairs!

I’m sure this is all information that has already been imparted to you further up the thread, they’re a helpful bunch of space nuts here, but don’t let mishaps like this sour the experience. I’m still finding myself somewhere near the bottom of a delightfully long learning curve, and figuring things out the hard way is part of the fun!

Keep flying CMDR, and safe travels o7

I've run into it as well. Didn't realize I had to turn the module back on after repairing it. Fortunately for me, my a-HA moment was with the FSD, so I learned pretty cheaply when I told the AI to make the jump and I was told my FSD was offline.

Lucky you! I noticed my CMDR’s panicked breathing in the helmet as the o2 supply dwindled...
