Rank +1? What is this?

I've just been given the rank of Elite 1 in trade.
When did this become a thing that there were ranks above Elite? Is there any in game benefits to this?

Nice to have, just didn't realise it was a thing until now.

Unfortunately Fdev brought in "prestige ranks" when they brought in the on foot stuff . They set totals but only if you are playing in Odyssey ( I would be explorer 5 if they used their totals) . They are pretty meaningless and we're just fluff to do as those who had already gotten elite needed something to aim for .
Or they thought it would be a good idea .

I have to admit I didn't really get the reasoning for it .
I had been triple elite since 2017 and was happy for that and was still playing . They brought in the on foot stuff and exo and I would have been happy for that to be Elite .
And was a little put out that all the work I had done in the traditional Elites was discounted because I was at the time playing on Xbox .
I have managed elite 2 in trade over a month doing the PP stuff and the new CG .👍
But it's just bragging rights , I know there was a huge rush to be Elite 5 in all but CQC which I suppose was what Fdev wanted . But I'm a grumpy old man .

The extra ranks let you get decals with stars on, more decals is always a good thing.

While I don’t object to the extra ranks they don’t incentivise me the way the originals did so I am even more than before just playing to have fun, which means it can come as a complete surprise when a new congratulations message comes through.

They were added with Odyssey's release. So now after Elite there are also Elite I to V (so technically 6X Elite I guess).

Note Odyssey isn't required, only a v4.0+ game client, including Horizons. I don't have Odyssey and I leapt to Trade Elite II in the past week or so (a new level at roughly each additional 1B credits of trade profit).

The ranks aren't available in Horizons. Which many of those left behind when EDO dropped and consoles also .

I assume you're talking about the "legacy Horizons" v3.8 client. As I said, the added ranks are definitely in the "live Horizons" v4.0+ game client.

Whether that was always the case or not I don't know as I wasn't playing when Odyssey first released, but it's definitely true now (and I updated the wiki to that effect last week).

Yeah it gets harder to remember what was called what at the split . I had took it as horizons was consoles , live 4.0 was Odyssey light and Odyssey was the full. I may just start calling it Consoles and Odyssey now.

Yeah I think that's more or less it...

Horizons was the v2.0 paid expansion, initially PC-only and then later the consoles were introduced.

All platforms went thru the v3.0 Beyond free updates "together".

v4.0 Odyssey paid expansion released to PCs only. Horizons features were rolled into the v4.0 game client as the new "base game", so all PC users have access to the v4.0+ galaxy whether they bought Odyssey or not. Odyssey owners have more content, but the game engine and BGS is shared between all v4.0+ users.

FD later announced consoles were done, leaving them frozen at v3.8, which got the "legacy Horizons" label. Consoles and PCs can still play in the dead-end v3.8 multiverse variant lol if they want.
