Newcomer / Intro Rank missions

I have been playing for about three weeks now doing dozens of missions. I make sure to only accept missions of the Fed supported factions and have gotten some faction.

My problem is that every promotion missions that pops up is a hunt mission. I go after the target and find my little ship up against a massive ship and its wing men. Is there a way to rank up without being able to take out an Anaconda?

To OP
You should try to find a friend or two in you near your position and get them to "wing" up with you and then finish the mission...
I not sure if the ranking missions are fixed 'cause I didn't have to face any wing's back when i got my rank with the Feds, but that may be due to the Wing-feature didn't exist back then...

btw. if you cannot find anybody to team up with or you only play in solo mode, then I'll suggest you save up some credits to buy a vulture and do some upgrading to it before taking on the 'conda and its wing...

The ranking missions should not have you fighting Anaconda's as far as i remember. Only Dropships and Clippers. Also they should not have wingmen, although I did all my ranking missions before 1.2 and wings.
To OP. I'm a bounty hunter and fly a Vulture and have taken down dozens of Anaconda's in my time. I'd be willing to team up with you for the mission to help you out.

Hi
im a bit confused. Aren't fed ranking missions different from accepting hunting missions from a fed all aligned system?

Generally yes, but some rank missions require you to hunt and kill a target.

Never tried the targets wasn't alone though, I'm not sure OP is doing the right mission.

I finished the Count mission yesterday, which is an Assassination. Lone Clipper (and always is apparently), was expecting a little more. No idea if the other ranking assassinations are still as easy as when I did them pre-1.2

Thanks for the info. It is nice to have such a helpful group when starting a new game.

I did one Rank up mission by accident but don't remember the details just know I did it because I have the first rank step. That was long ago and I am glad to hear that the rank missions have been fixed now.

When I said they were "fixed" I meant they are always the same. For that Rank you will always get an Assassination of the same (or maybe very similar) type of ship.
We dont think the Rank Assassination missions have Wings, so suspect you experienced a regular Assassination Mission, not a Rank one, although most of us did the early ones before Wings was introduced, so we could be wrong on that one.

AFAIK there is nothing broken in any of the Ranking Missions, except the Permits thing that you can just ignore anyway.

I agree with Dommarraa, once you've been offered a ranking mission, the next offer will be the same ... I spent quite a long time waiting for a non-combat-stabiliser mission to appear a while back :)

So you need to do the hunt mission, either by getting someone to help you or by jumping into a more powerful combat ship, upgrading it, and learning to get the most out of it. Viper or (preferably) Vulture would be your best bet, depending on your piloting skill and credit balance.

It seems to be a random shot if they have wingmen or not. I can confirm they still may have them, having just done this mission. First try I got swarmed and had to run like hell. I just dropped the mission and picked another from a different system for a guy with a different name. When I found him, he was in a lone Federal Drop Ship. Tough fight vs. my Cobra, but I managed to outlast him.

Maybe it was a clipper not an anaconda. All I know is that my little ship gets ripped in half before I can even drop his shields.

So should I just give up on rank missions until I have a ship that can stand up to that level of fire? Is there any tricks that would allow an Asp to take out a clipper?

An asp should be able to take a clipper one on one. Tool up for the occasion, drop the multi role and kit for bear. Drop cargo and scoop, get a Huge shield and boosters or cells of your choice etc. Make sure you target pp.
If it is a populated system, you might try and drag the fight out till the cops turn up, but I can't guarantee they will. Once they have engaged, it really does get easy.

Does anyone else think that rank missions stink?

Aside from the pun - anytime you go against a Clipper just target either drive, they sit out there unprotected and taking out one will kill the ship.

It's the Clipper's Achilles heel and an Asp properly rigged for combat can do this mission quite easily.

it can be a bit intimidating and nerve racking if you don't have much combat experience, but it isn't impossible by any means. Don't be afraid to jump out if you think you're getting bested and try again later - all part of the learning process.

HTH
