Rank progression through missions

I'm hoping that I'm missing something simple, but overall things seem a bit odd to me. The progress made from various missions towards your next rank seem to be a bit off.

I've been focusing on increasing my Empire rank, because Clipper, and have been grabbing basically every Medium or High mission I can get my hands on. However, every now and then I notice something strange when it comes to how much progress the different types of missions give towards your next rank.

For example: tonight I did a courier mission labeled "Medium," but after I made the delivery I gained 7% towards the my next rank. However, there were three charity missions labeled "High" at the station that I had completed the courier mission at (both donations and food delivery), so I completed them as well. Odd thing is, those three "High" rated missions combined put me 2% closer to my next rank.

Is is just me, or is something off here?

What the mission describes as influence change is the amount of local influence the faction will gain upon completion. Not the amount of influence you personally will gain with said faction.

I'm talking about the Rep. The Rep was listed as Medium and High. Truth be told, I do t even bother to look at influence half the time.

Ah sorry, miss read. My bad.

Just had a look at the BB in game. The reputation in mission description corresponds to the reputation bar in the RH panel (ie neutral, friendly, allied etc etc) not to the rank bar. As far as I know there is no way of telling whether a mission will give you more or less rank progress. It seems to be combat has the best but at the moment it's just a case of "do missions until rank is gained" and hope for the best.

That's what I believe too. The mission description in no way indicates what it is worth in terms of rep for the major faction.

I did a couple of "Above and beyond" cargo hauling missions earlier today. Gave my naval rank a nice 8% bump each time.

AFAIK reputation & influence mentioned in the mission blurb do not indicat impacts to naval rank.

Ah ok, I see. Well, the issue now is that I'm having a hard time finding missions to do, let alone cimabt ones. Everywhere I go has one or two missions I can do and about ten that I can't :/ I'm also beginning to realize that my Cobra may be a better mission ship than my Courier, especially considering the lack of combat missions.

Yes trade, combat and Explorer ranks are also important so it's not easy.

Are good shorter range mission hubs.

Are a couple of good medium range mission hubs.

I am ranking up slowly but surely in my Cobra, and the Cobra is a fun ship ... but the Courier must be too.

If you stick to a local area, gaining rep with local factions, they will give you progressively more missions. Sometimes, I go back to my starting point (Achenar) just to pick up more missions again, because the missions tend to cause you to disperse your rep over a wide area.
