Rank up in one faction should decrease rank in the other?

Plus how would they even know?

It's not like your name would hit the news, and I doubt factions publish details of missions, ranks, rep etc so their rivals can see them...

So, it's a no from me.

I'm Australian. But if I do something that helps France, my government doesn't care.

Really, the only problem is the official names of the ranks. How can an independent civilian pilot get military ranks?

On the other hand, I think failing to accept or to complete too many naval missions should result in rank demotion.

something like: you need to complete X missions every Y time period to retail rank.

No, not at all. Once you gain a rank, it's yours for life, even after you retire. Have you seen how many historical advisors are used on documentaries - eg Rear Admiral soandso (Ret.). The only question is whether Imperial ranks are hereditory, or do your offspring gain some other kind of title, making them part of the proper upper class?

They are Honourary ranks, if fact I think the Imperial ranks are "puffed up joke titles" like the ones you can buy on Ebay, to get Pilots for work for the Empire for free, so so long as there is no state of war, I don't think the Great powers care.
You are an independent pilot and member of the Pilots Federation after all and they know you are always going to be on the mercenary side of the line.
You have taken no oath or service, nor signed you life away, and as a consequence you title is just that, hollow and outside the real chain of command.

But France and Australia are allies! and not at war with each other! They are "minor factions" and are allied.

ED take place during serious wartime.....

Retire? Commanders get a pension?
Offspring? That means, ugh! sex!:D
And when do Commanders have the opportunity for that tedious exercise? I mean, well, there's no one else in that cockpit but you.
And it would be dangerous if it there were. You might inadvertently boost at an inappropriate time.:)

There is no state of war between any of the Major factions.
Minor factions from either side might engage in bushfire conflicts and proxy wars, but no are sanctioned by the Senate or Congress.
I refer to the censure of the Imperial faction expanding into Volungu by both sides.

"Now, 1,000 years later, in the year 3300, both Factions have grown in size, in technology, and are in a state of Cold War where their settlements overlap. Both sides back proxy wars and rebellions as disputes break out around human space and they reward Pilots who work on their behalf."

From Elite: Dangerous.com, the opposite of what you write

That isn't the opposite of what I wrote.
"Cold war" isn't a state of War, Officially and Legally there is a Peace Treaty in place for nearly 1000 years as mentioned.
As I said there are proxy wars, but nothing that is Empire vs Federation as a whole.

GalNet News 27th of April 3301 said:
President Halsey Denounces Patron’s Principles
This weekend saw the outbreak of a skirmish between Imperial and Federal forces in the small but significant system of Volungu. Reports indicate that the conflict was started by the Patron’s Principles, an Empire-aligned organisation based in the nearby Liaedin region.

For years Liaedin was caught in almost constant civil war as the Faveol and Blossom families fought to gain control of the region. The two sides eventually settled their differences, with the Imperial Faveol family ultimately being given governorship of the system.

Now it looks as if the feud could be starting up again, as the Faveol family-run Patron’s Principles have made the seemingly rash decision to attempt to expand their influence beyond Liaedin’s borders.

President Halsey has denounced the move by Patron’s Principles, calling it ‘a reckless abandonment of years of hard-won peace’. The Federal Navy has launched a small fleet to repel the invasion, and has requested that any Commanders interested in securing Volungu should sign up for active duty aboard Jemison Refinery.

When asked for comment, Chancellor Blaine’s office stated that the Patron’s Principles were acting without the support or knowledge of the Imperial Senate. Imperial sources close to the region noted that members of the East India Company have been dispatched to the area to try to resolve the matter peacefully.

It should be possible to get a demotion in rank if you've been naughty. failing to support your chosen faction, actively working against them by combat in CZ, working against them in a CG.

I think yes. I mean, it just makes sense. If you have declared for one then news of that is going to get back to the others.

hehe just both sides backing proxy wars..... :)

It's a tricky one. I think it would add a fun element if you had to keep doing the missions to keep your rank but also can see that not really working. One work around could be based on percentage of registered pilots/players. An example would be that for every 1000 players with a fed rank, only 1 of them can achieve the top rank, only 10 the second rank and so forth - How this would work in game would that you work your way up the rank but if you don't play for a while you can drop a rank - Maybe make it so you can't drop this way by more than 1 rank in a 6 month period. Also if you do something for an opposing faction (once the major factions are at FULL war) you can loose rank as well, much more quickly. These are just my opinions and ideas.

personally i think that if you have military rank for fed or empire you should be hostile to all factions which are part of other alliance. And you would have some kind of basic bounty on you, which could be collected by cmdr with military rank with alliance that control the area. After all you are millitary vessel without permission on wrong side of the border. Like russian fighters aren´t allowed to use airspace of Nato countries.

This would make game mutch more interesting, and you would need to choose between factions.
