Rank with the Empire and naval progression, what missions???

Ello there fellow CMDR's,
So I have recently been trying to obtain the imperial clipper. Nice that they dropped the required rank to obtain it.
however, the ambiguous nature of the ranking systems has gotten very frustrating.
I have been completing missions in an Empire allegiance system of Corporate government.
Handed in 5 completed missions, all requiring someone's death.
Checked my rep after and the Empire had a little red down arrow next to it. !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!:S
So I did 5 missions and lost rank/rep? If its due to the missions I completed so be it. I'll not do those.
However, those were the available missions. Figured naval progression probably meant killing people so it was okay.
Am I wrong with my mission choice? must I only chose errands and give us $ missions?
Any insight would be most helpful.

Read this even if you don't follow doing charity missions (it's totally your choice) it will give you a good idea of how the rank progression system works. Long story short it has zero to do with reputation, so stop looking at the up/down rep arrows, they don't count at all towards rank.

Go to a station that has at least one minor faction that is a member of the major faction you want to rank up with (Fed or Empire). Do missions for that minor faction, do more missions for that minor faction, just keep doing missions for that minor faction. Eventually you will get a Naval rank ascension mission opportunity, if the one that pops up doesn't take your fancy, just log out and back in and it will update the bulletin board with another. Once you reach the trigger level for a rank ascension mission it will keep spitting them out until you complete it and gain the next rank, then you begin from square one again for the next rank. It is incredibly simple, it's literally just a mission grind. If you read through that thread you will get some kind of idea of how many completed missions are required for each rank. I will tell you now though since one of the patches that came after 1.3 the number of missions required for each rank has been raised to almost INSANE levels, for example the final rank in the Federation tree, Admiral, now requires something in the ballpark of 552 completed missions to trigger the ascension mission opportunity.

I would take missions for only one minor faction in a system. Make sure those missions don't do anything to harm your imp rating (like something against another imp minor faction).

Try handing in several missions at at once.

Also take not that not all of the minor factions in empire-controlled systes are aligned wioth the empire. You can check which ones are aligned with the empire in your ship's right side console.

Ello there fellow CMDR's!
Thanks for all the good advice. Been digging through the forums and that was just giving more questions than answers.
I'll deffinatly be checking all available data now.
Thanks again!

I have been Serf for 3 weeks now, and the ONLY missions I pick up are empire missions.. so im not holding my breath anytime soon for a new rank mission... hoping they fix some of this in a mini patch real soon

The bug (that is supposed to have been fixed in last patch) is that on doing the ascension missions, some players were not seeing a Rank increase.

Although I cannot definitely say there is no bug to fix, I have not yet seen any admission (or proof) that the there is one.

There is a lot of advice (some of it quite specific) from people who are not having this issue. Perhaps there is something in what they are saying that you are not doing, that might help you get those ascension missions?

I find it rather ironic that Naval rank ascension missions involve going out to a system to find an illegal canister,(3) or to obtain illegal weapons and then smuggle them back into a station. Just feels like little to no effort was made to create something even remotely realistic. Travel out to some randomly selected system, aimlessly muddle until a WSS generates, check the WSS, rinse and repeat until a WSS with the desired items generates. Zzzzzzzzz.
