Ranking Federation/Empire post 1.5/Horizons is pretty nice with new missions, thanks Frontier!

Finally hit Duke in Empire, and got up to Ensign in Federation.

Interestingly, it took one upgrade in rank to "activate" the progression bars, which were previously broken and not updating for me and many others.

I found that long-range smuggling is the best way to progress now, and it's quite good. It appears you can still "stack" missions as you could before, but even once that is removed, long range smuggling is still #1 for ranking...and the extra money is nice.

edit: I should probably add I am Tycoon in trading. Trade rank, and local faction rank will play a large role in what is made available to you.

So with these new long-range missions, either you get the very low quantity goods that will have you fail on mission scan (these missions will be 2-5m on average for ~4ish on average cargo, rare)... but also long-range smuggling missions also have 40-100 cargo, common, missions. You wont be making 50-100m a trip, but you can make ~ 10m an hour with 5ish smuggling missions, while also ranking up pretty fast. I would not recommend doing this purely for the money, but if you're trying to rank up in fed/empire, I highly recommend this method over donations.

Did about 75 donation missions, and then only 10 smuggling missions to get from Marquis to Duke. This is pretty major... getting from Earl to Marquis was like 500 donation missions... a massive...boring... grind, but definitely the quickest and best choice prior to 1.5/Horizons.

If you are trying to combine smuggling with ranking up, just take long range missions for empire/fed factions, none of the other factions. There are plenty of missions to choose from, you can probably get filled up with 1-3 updates. Right now you can do the whole solo-private-open game, but that is poised to be removed from updating bulletin boards. Even once that is removed, you will need 1-2 updates and still be all set anyway. I never even took any of the surface missions, just port-port.

For smuggling for the Federation, Sothis and some of the surrounding areas with stations is good.
For smuggling for the Empire, Fehu is good.

One major change is if you have a high-cargo ship, you can take 5-10 of the "safe," non-illegal missions, filling your hull up, still making 5-10 million an hour and getting lots of rank on delivery. Really nice. I was just using an Asp to do it, but after this last trip I was going to grab my Conda... but I wound up getting an imperial ascension after finishing.

I really appreciate getting these new mission updates Frontier. Makes ranking up way more enjoyable!

... now I am off to get my new Cutter :)

Really nice to hear that!. I was just waiting for a reasonable way of ranking up without grinding endlessly. Smuggling and trading seems like a good one.

Thank you for the heads up!

Where exactly is a good high paying/high influence smuggling mission at? I can't for the life of me find one! I don't care about risks btw. If you know any near apoyota that would be great

Does anyone know where to find a high pay/ high influence mission is? I can't for the life of me find one! Risk doesn't matter, and something preferably near apoyota and Harma. Using the term "near" lightly

Robigo for Federation.

Aditi/Fehu for Empire.

So, if you want to roleplay a decent fellow that does not smuggle, you're boned? Check.

Same thing with kill missions. All I get now is assassinations and killing civilians. Seems everybody stopped worrying about the plague of pirates in their systems...

Does anyone know of any good smuggling guides that are still relevant in 2.0? I haven't done it myself. I am a little worried if I'd do more harm than good to standings if I get scanned. :-S.

Robigo its a mine outpost so you cant land with big ship in it, and Sothis and surrounding system doesnt have enough missions of smuggling to be better than tun or exbeur with donation of charity missions to rank up faster, still looking for a good system for federation rank up.

Just a heads up on this topic. I've been doing surface missions in Fehu, inside the system, and I've gone up 1% after... 40 missions. (Viscount Rank). It seems distance is a very important factor when gaining reputation...

It would also appear this doesn't work for everyone.

I've now done about 10 Smuggling and 5 long haul missions but none of them gave me any Navy Progress. The 3 Charity missions that spawned however all yielded 1%.

I will stress again, you need to pay attention to who you are accepting missions from.

You do not want to fail or give up, this hurts you.

Taking missions from opposing factions will do a lot more harm. Harm outweighs good, so you want to avoid harmful actions. I had to deliberately turn down a few 5M+ credit missions because they weren't coming with a faction aligned with what I needed (Federal or Empire).

Been haulin' from Aditi for the last few days. All missions given by Empire factions, for Empire factions, all tagged with Empire badge. I am just about 40 million richer, my rank hopelessly stuck on 33% Squire. Something stinks.

Meanwhile lawful combat pilots spend 3 hours finding a mission, then another who knows how many hours killing 50 pirates at a nav point, and get maybe a couple percent progress. At least it's decent income all things considered. Yay.
Tried going lawless and doing assassinations. Cut the time per mission in half, cut the % gained in half. Wanted everywhere. Reduced income to a pittance. Doubled the risk. Yay.

Either way, my morale is dropping fast.

I'm not sure if there are bugs or the balance is just completely off, or a combination of the two. The best mission I got progress-wise was one to kill 33 smugglers for about 1.2 mil, which took an eternity to find and a good while to do, but awarded 7% progress towards knight. But I've never seen such progress before even in much more difficult missions.

They reduced the amount of pirate killing missions by way too much - I saw maybe 3-4 of them since Horizons launched, and I've looked. At least 2 of them weren't for a faction I was interested in working for (ranking up purposes). Missions that need you to transport classified data are good, but only if they're not the kind where you have to meet a contact in space, as those appear to be broken. If you can find a mission for a fed/empire faction that has you transporting classified data to a station say, 50ish ly away, that's well worth taking - a single one of those gave me 3% progress from viscount to count. Meanwhile doing 4 surface missions where I needed to hack an operations terminal of a surface outpost only gave me 1% progress in total. I'll give Aditi a try, see how that works out.

Try throwing in one or two courier missions as well. Cash is much lower, but it may resolve your bug. I noticed this when I was hauling from Fehu, playing it safe mainly taking courier missions (Jesus you get interdicted like CRAZY if you have shadow missions on). I would take one or two cargo missions along the way that would have a considerably higher reward than the courier ones and should therefore boost % towards the next rank a little more. I had the same problem of submitting those and not getting any rank increase, but then I noticed as soon as I submitted a courier mission after that, the boost was way higher than it should be for that type of mission, meaning it probably counted the increase from the cargo one as well. So my guess is your progression is there, you just have to trigger it to appear on your screen :) Hope that's the case.

A -400 LY smuggling run for the imperials from Fehu worth 3M got me 2%.

A 1-system-jump delivery got me 12 % The Secret data one or so.

I actually check the rank progress change after each mission, and most bring 1% or 2%, some very good ones 3% but all of them take forever to accomplish, when these 1-stop-deliveries (sometimes) seem to gain over 10% for a 3 minute run. I will find out exactly which ones these are and concentrate on doing only them (its not the kill list thing)

System is screwed, no fun at all atm. Need % income on BB before accepting or it being tied to influence change or monetary reward. Current system just sucks and everyone still hates it for not being remotely fun, what were FD thinking?

For empire, best is to take your trading ship (at least 250t cargo) and then go to Aditi.

From there, take only the surface missions towards diamond vision at 12 ly (all legal) + the ones called data something. These missions are spamming a lot so after multiple refresh (around one hour), cargo is full so you can go deliver. Around 12% increase each trip at Marquis rank with cargo filled around 85%.

That s what i have done to get to Duke.

Advise : data missions have often a short timer so start to take them only your cargo tank is filled at 50%.

Payout is bad when using this method. That is the inconvenient of it.

Hope it helps.
