Ranking/Ratings, how they affect gameplay?

Thinking back to the original Elite credits really weren't such a big deal. Once you'd got enough credits and bought your upgrades which didn;t take too long, the main focus of the game was working towards the next Elite ranking...

Right on Commander!

With the majority leaving the game after the insurmountable barrier that was Deadly.

In ED the situation seems to be reversed in that (at least for me) the main goal seems to be accruing credits to work towards the next ship/component upgrade while the rating (and ranks) are almost an irrelevance.

I'm currently Competent where most Cmdrs I seem to see are Harmless, does it mean anything? No. =( It's not like I get any benefit for it, special deals or favours, nothing extra at with Pilot's Federation, no missions, nor does it get me a sponsorship deal with Saud Kruger in return for equipping a special sponsored paint job.

I'm a Baron in the Empire, what the chuff does that mean, well nowt it seems, afaik it has no relevance whatsoever within the game. =(

Ok yes you could argue that back in '84 ratings actually no relevance either as far as the game was concerned, but from a player's point of view that *was* the game, there was nothing else. ED has added elements to all aspects of it's successor, but the ratings system seems to have been completely left behind.

I can't help wishing ranks had more (any) relevance, combat rank, military ranks too. Even just a "Right on Commander!" would be something.

I think when you reach Dangerous something happens.

Rep and rank arent fully implemented probably, I dont believe anyway. Its basically the bare bones what we have right now.
