Ranking up in the Empire

For the sake of getting my grubby's on a Clipper, I am trying to rank up in Empire space. I have gotten a rank progression mission only once and yes, I am taking all the "no pay" missions I can find and am at friendly status.

Do I have to take on some of the "donation" requests? IE: Is palm greasing required to get some ranking up missions available?

If so, fine. But so far the only one I have seen is asking 4 million credits!!!

Make sure you are doing the reputation gain missions with factions allied to the empire. If the region you are in is allied to you, move somewhere else and get rep up there. The progression missions can be random in how they spawn, sometimes you get lucky.

I have never done any "donation" missions and got my Clipper quite easily, so I can safely say you don't have to do them. Just keep doing mission for Empire allied factions and Naval missions will pop up eventualy.

Do 3-4 missions for the local Empire faction in a system then move to the next, they'll appear after a while. Each time I've done a donation mission (I.E give 40K creds, + rep) I've been given an advancement (Baron now)

Go to Achenar as soon as you receive the summoning, there are 5 parties there to work for.
Become allied with them and also work for the others factions in the systems near Achenar.
