Ranking up with the Feds...or anyone, really.

I've been playing this game for long enough that I should know this, but I don't.

For a while, like many, I was tempted by the prospect of one day owning the small and cheap-to-upgrade ship known as the Federal Corvette. Like others, I went to a few well-known Federal stations and ran data missions to rank up - and this worked, but doing the same thing was not fun for me, so I stopped and went on to different things. 2 HUGE ranks, and a seeming eternity away from a Corvette

Last night I was running delivery and passenger missions from Ray Gateway. The station is not Federal, but a few of the factions are. My rank went up by 4%. Is this from running Federal faction missions? Will this work wherever I go?
My rank definitely increased, and all I did was a salvage mission, 2 delivery missions and a very short passenger job.

So, can you rank up simply by doing jobs for federal aligned factions wherever you are? Does this also work for the Empire?7 Please say it's possible, and I'm not dreaming... If it's not, I'm at a total loss as to how to explain my sudden rank increase.

Yes, your rank will increase anywhere, as long as you do missions for Federal factions. Same applies for the Empire.

The "hot spot" systems are only advertised because they offer an over-abundance of missions. That's all there is to it, not because it's the only place you can do it.

Oh good grief - Thanks for the clarification. So the speed of rank up is the same, its just the abundance of missions at the 'famous' sites? Whoah...All these years and I never realised, hopefully this may help someone else as stupid who is wondering the same thing as me :)

As long as you take missions from Fed aligned factions you'll gain Federal rank, when you reach 100% of say Cadet you'll be offered a mission to progress to the next rank complete that and you've moved up.

Transporting passengers can be the fastest way to gain rank, if you look for the +++ rank increase missions making sure you don't take illegal passengers you should be able to move up through the ranks fairly quickly, I decided to rank up to admiral just for fun and I'm currently at vice admiral +46%.

It works for the Empire as well just find a suitable system/base and stay in the general area as the quantity and quality of missions will improve as the local factions become allied towards you, BTW the Corvette is a monster! :)

I suspect the Corvette is also expensive...I have bought a Cutter a little while ago after some Imperial rank grinding and in doing so I also earned a significant amount of cash but despite having a net worth of over 0.8 billion I can not yet afford to kit out the Cutter as I would like it (I'm not selling the rest of the fleet). I'm probably nuts but slowly ranking up in federation at the moment with the long term aim of getting a Corvette, lord only knows how I will afford it though once it is unlocked!

I have heard it said on these forums that it's most efficient for ranking if you use multiple systems, rather then grinding on one. Hopefully that is the case as I'm not will/able to stand doing the grind that others deem necessary (and it doesn't seem to do much for their outlook!)
