Ranking with federation

This morning I've decided to go about the task of ranking with the federation. I had no rank this morning but I'm at 80% in the first level now. But I'm 100% allied with them. What does that mean and how with it affect my ranking?

The "allied" bar-thing in the HUD is just an indicator of how the various superpowers feel about you at the time.
Do a few missions for the Imp's and their bar will go up and the Fed' bar will go down.
I don't think it has an effect on the actual naval rank process.

Main thing to pay attention to, when attempting to gain naval rank, is to do missions for the appropriate faction (duh!) and try to focus on missions that offer rep+++ as a reward, even if that means ignoring missions that pay better.

I thought, and I could be hopelessly wrong, that Allied gave a slight multiplier to the amount of experience gained from each mission?

That sounds plausible.

Can't say I ever really noticed any tangible difference while ranking-up though.
Mind you, given that it takes something like 200-odd missions to go from Post Captain to Rear Admiral, it's not the sort of thing you tend to pay close attention to.

I noticed that my rep' with the Federation (and the Empire) had dropped to 70% while I was away.
I've done about a dozen missions for fed' factions (which I already have "allied" status with) in the week I've been back and my rep' is back up to 100%.

If the rep' does increase how quickly you rank-up, I guess the trick would be to get yourself "allied" status with one fed' faction and then take missions they give to get the rep' up to 100% before doing whatever else you do to gain rank.

"How much progress one has made toward a rank can be seen in the right HUD panel, in the Reputation section of the Status tab. The current rank is shown by name along with a percentage indicator to show the progress made towards the next rank.

Once the rank indicator reaches 100%, the player will be able to find special Federation Navy missions that will promote the user to the next rank.

While the percentage indicator will not indicate more than 100%, the player is able to complete non-navy missions beyond that level and then complete several Navy missions in a row."

I just pulled this off the Elite wikia and... my question is, where is this special mission once your rank hits 100%? Is it at a specific station? Have I failed it already? How in the heck? Halp pleez?
I'm trying to get into Sol.

Thanks :D

Cordial/friendly/allied = how much the faction in question loves you. Not much impact on Fed/Empire/Alliance rank progression unless they're part of the said "Superpower" and the missions you complete for them then goes into increasing the Superpower's rank progression.

When you take missions, take note of the slightly translucent watermark on the right side of their faction name - they indicate if they are part of a Superpower. A blank on the right means they're independent.

Superpower ranking - when you reach 100% in that rank, you should start seeing missions named like "Federal Navy requires....." or "Imperial Navy needs....". Those are the missions to push you over to the next rank.

Nope, these missions should show up at any reasonably-friendly stations that are part of the Superpower. Look for these missions where the factions are part of the Superpower you want to rank up with (the logo on the right side of the mission-giver's names). Generally the faction should also be more than Neutral with you to have these rank-up missions being made available to you.

A much more important question is how to get RID of Federation rank.

Obviously there are places you might want to go that are Rank Locked, but once you GOT that permit, and had a look can't we have some mechanism to be demoted?
Hell, I'll take a dishonorable discharge - just get this Fed rank off my record.
