Ranks in ED are Pointless

The ranks don't do much *yet*, but later on I would speculate you will need to be at a certain rank to not only access certain ships, discounts and star systems in the game, but also other faction specific features like high level missions, other "things" that will have profound effects on the Galaxy and all that before we even consider what impact the Thargoids will ultimately have on the game. For example perhaps you will have to be at a certain higher rank to have dealings with the Thargoid Empire that don't just involve deploying hard points.

Yeah, well, that only works if both parties in a conversation roleplay...as it is, you're just another bloke in front of a computer screen. (and that's no offense at all, merely a fact).

I'm simply written it down to a player who came into ED expecting the same as with all other games. Hand-holding, easy-mode, respawning dullness. I don't blame them, I mean, ED is most certainly not the norm.

Well, I believe that once you hit a certain rank you can become a Federal patrol escort and get paid by the federation for taking down wanted, Empire or alliance. You should receive aleast a 25% or more discount off any federal ship in a Federation controlled system and have access to high end gear that Feds get. (not sure but, hey)

Seriously? No. It has taken me many many hours to get my assets to over 35 million. I just think that after spending all that time trade grinding, I shouldn't have to waste time grinding for meaningless rep.
