Once you've obtained a rank can you lose it? I finally obtained rank of Baron. Still long way from enough credits to buy an Imperial Clipper. Do I have to worry about losing Baron rank before I have enough creds to buy?
Ranks - is it possible to drop in ranking

Did they change that in one of the updates? I know I lost ranks at once point, probably back in early February, from turning in rank advancement missions of all things. I've been very careful not to let anything beat on my rep too hard since then, now that I've maxed Fed and Imp ranks, since I want to be able to buy the ships at some point.

Didn't know that you can lose rank progress - even though I think it makes sense: betray or disappoint your military one time too often and deal with the consequences! It makes ranks feel more relevant, I think.
But what you describe sounds a like a bug, don't you think?
