Elite Dangerous Rant on the Mission system

Hello commanders,

I am a fan of Space opera, sims, arcade etc. I have played many space related games on the past and I even created my own multiverse where I role-play with some friends.
It is not surprise then that I decided to play ED, and I fell in love with the atmosphere of the game, the ships, the stations, the sheer size of the game, the voice of the AI on the ship. I love it all.

But I can't stand how badly and poorly design are the quest. I haven't gotten any far on the game and every time I try to pick it up I get blown to the void trying to do some dogfighting or bored landing on different space stations trying to find a mission.

Why missions are badly design you ask me? Well, for starters, missions are not varied enough, and new players cant really choose missions cause they ask you, more often than not, to have stuff you don't have yet (be it reputation, cargo space, firepower, jump-distance, ect)
The game need to put new players in a place where they can see the different possibilities of the game and not throw then on the void with the attitude to "just do whatever you want" cause they will, like me, try to shoot down a civilian to steal his goodies and be blown apart by security forces, or try to kill the "bad guy that has a bounty" and be disappointed when it just turns around and kill you. New players need to be shown what the game is and what they can do, and for that dear reader, there is missions. A new player will most of the time search for a mission to aid steer and comprehend the cluster that is the game on first sight (relly, there is too much stuff and you can easily lose a lot of time trying to understand some basic , and believe-me some will just give up).

There is an easy way to do that.
  • All new commanders (new character that is) start on the same system and on the same orbital facility (no mater if it is a new horizons player or not).
  • ALL the missions on the system (the whole system) are available to new players, no exceptions (they require low level, low rep, low cargo capacity conditions).
  • Missions that send you on another system should not be more that 2-3 systems away from the starting system.
  • Starting system is a neutral system (neutral but not lawless).
  • New players should get access to one mission of each type for the first time, so they see what each type of mission is and how they play. yes, even transporting people (give him a rented ship or whatever).
  • Vet player should still have to do on that system (so not "only" newbie missions but mid and high end level missions) so there is some vets that can help new players.
  • New players should, once they finish the "tutorial missions" be on possession of enough resources and credits to improve the starting ship or to buy a new one.

The goal of all this is to help new players and to steer them towards what they really want to do. devs have to do like all the MMOS do, help the starting player get his starting gear while showing him the world that awaits him. Missions are there for that.

Cmdr Zankastia off,
