Rare animals. In game and real life

Hey everybody. Today I wanted to talk about animals rarely found in zoos and in game. Also have you seen any.
The internet gave me some examples of animals rarely seen in zoos that I have seen a good amount of so therefore I’m not going to take google searches advice.

In game that I know of
Giant pandas (understandably rare due to Chinas programs)
Chinese pangolins ( I think I’ve seen one at the Bronx zoo)
Probiscus monkeys: very critical dietary needs and I think I’ve heard Singapore zoo has some
Brown throated sloth: I think one place in the US has some but compared to the other sloths not so much.
Somali wild ass: found in Wisconsin and I believe is the only US zoo to have them.

I can’t pull up the type of snakes but the Bronx zoo got ahold of rare snakes seized from an FBI raid on a snake dealers operation.

I know some animals we have in game are rarely seen off home continent. Let me know if I missed any and tell me if you’ve been to a certain zoo that has them.

Also the fruit bat. To my knowledge they are kept in like 1 australian zoo and thats it
Featherdale, Hunter Valley wildlife parks have them, as well as various bat conservancies that care for rescued wild bats that have been orphaned with mothers potentially being affected by Paralysis Ticks, or to deforestation. But they have a little more of a captive presence than Proboscis Monkeys and Brown-Throated Sloths

Oh, several US zoos definitely keep and breed Somali wild ass. San Diego and St Louis keep breeding groups. And I think Dallas and Miami also have them as well. Even my local zoo houses a pair of surplus males
Gotcha thanks
Like I said the internet wasn’t giving me reliable intel

Pronghorn are very rare in captivity, I think.

They‘re only kept in NA I believe
Within their native range in western North America they are not too rare, I think even some non accredited places have them. In the rest of North America they are very rare, I know Queens Zoo has them at least.

There is none outside of North America though, all attempts to keep them In Europe failed after a short while since they are extremely susceptible to changes in humidity. I believe there was also attempts to keep them in Japan where they may have fared slightly better but they all died eventually as well.

Yeah there are no pronghorn in europe since the 70s

Goliath Frog is an interesting case.
Seems like Chester Zoo had one in 2014, it is talked a bit about here but not much info. Zootierliste also mentions it under former holdings. A few other European Zoos seem to have had them into the early 2000s. Now they are all gone.

San Francisco got them according to their website: https://www.sfzoo.org/goliath-frog-2/
If anyone knows more about that then I am very curious.

Many sources say they don't do well in captivity, yet this is stated on Wikipedia:
''The goliath frog can live up to 15 years in the wild. In captivity, they can live up to 21 years.''
If that is true, then someone must have been successful with them

Bring me all your Goliath Frog gossip.

The frog at Chester was a customs seizure, it never went on show and didn't live long.

Location in the Zoo

Fish and Amphibians Zone of the Sculpture Learning Plaza

Could look like it just exists in the zoo in the form of a sculpture...

Yeah looks like it. There's a zoochat 2022 thread about rare animals in aza zoos that seem to say the goliath frogs have not been in captivity for a long time.

Supposedly the wild water buffalo (as opposed to the much more common domestic variant) is only found in captivity at the Kathmandu zoo in Nepal.

Thank you for correcting me and educating me on these animals status in captivity.
Change it up a bit
Do you like the idea of us having animals that are rarely in captivity? By that I mean just that very few have said animals and exclude those rarely found in zoos off of their home continents

Im more than happy to get unique and iconic animals that a rare in captivity like the proboscis monkey.
But we always should have other options, in the case of the proboscis monkey i think its kinda stupid that our only monkey for tropical asia is one that is super duper rare. I fell like alot of the hate for it stems from the fact that there is no other monkey to use instead that is common
