Newcomer / Intro Rare fixed lasers?

I might just be misunderstanding something about where to find weapons, but I'm having an issue finding an upgrade to my basic lasers. I've been playing a few days now, and I have the regular loaned lasers on my Sidewinder, with 300,000 to spend. The issue is that I haven't found any improvements being sold. I've upgraded just about everything else to C, but I'm not finding lasers above F.

I specifically want to have fixed lasers rather than the gimballed, because I want to continue to practice my aiming as I play. Are the fixed lasers just that rare, or should I be looking at different stations? Mostly I've been in industrial/mining or agricultural. Is it just that these stations don't sell much for weaponry? Thanks!

Hi,

The weapon slots work slightly differently to everything else. A sidewinder has 2 x small, or size 1 weapon mounts. You are limited by what can be installed on those mounts to either class G turrets, class F fixed or gimbals, or class E fixed (for beams).

You can change between pulse, burst or beams. Beams do more damage but cause more heat. Burst are a half-way house.

There is nothing "bigger or better" in energy weapon terms, than a size 1, Class E beam laser for that slot.

There are some components that can be "improved" by getting a better rating (the letter), some components only come in one rating.

Weapons are such a component. There is no E, G, D, C, etc... Class 1 Pulse Laser. There is only F-rated. Same with Cargo Holds - they are all E rated. Fuel tanks are all C rated. Internal structures are all I rated.

In general, when looking at weapons, I ignore rating entirely. I look for fixed/gimballed/turreted, and class (size).

Exeption: when you want to buy Shield boosters, KWS or Framshift scanners, those do come in different rating from A to E.... ;)

If you are still around LHS 3447 I would suggest heading to Kokojina. It is a relatively close high tech system that should have everything you need for outfitting. I would recommend grabbing a fuel scoop and learning how to use it before you make the trip though.


Also, as others have pointed out, weapons come in hardpoint sizes rather than ratings. They have a rating attached to them, but it is essentially meaningless at the moment.
