Why FD think that waiting is an interesting game mechanic, I still haven't figured out.
OP. Next time you are considering unlocking an engineer that wants rare goods, check the system state before you go there. If it is Boom, go straight there as you'll get a bonus amount. Anything else, you'll get lesser allocations and probably have to wait. If it is in Lockdown, don't bother as there won't even be a commodity market.
I unlocked that engineer 4 days ago. I was waiting for it to be in Boom and I could buy 45 cigars in one go. I was playing the rest of the game in the mean time. Following a scripted goal in ED doesn't seem to be working as it depends on actions of other players too. 45T in one go isn't bad at all.

Exactly, either give us a full allotment and be done with it, or reduce the max allotment to whatever the first drop is. Doing a rares' trade loop should be a fun way to see the bubble and earn some good cash as a newbie, instead, it's just a game of waiting until RNG-sus fills you up.

Back when rares trading was a profitable pass time, I felt that the frustration was one of those interesting balance mechanics.
Wait for a while or take what's there and keep moving.
I think now that they are just gatekeeper mechanisms for engineers, that the frustration is more keenly felt.
A rares loop as a trade run should be available for the engineer. Rare A, 120 Ly, Engineer, 15 Ly, Rare B, 140 Ly, Sell Rare B Buy Rare A.
But if there's no profit in that loop.
Wait for a while or take what's there and keep moving.

Actually it's not working with me.
I bought 45 cigars yesterday. I delivered them to Hera Tani and I went back to Kamitra and there's no more cigars. Multiple refresh, reboot the game, computer. Solo, private group or multi, that's not working. There's still no cigars in Kamitra anymore... What do I have to do ?

Odd. Got 45, went to Tani, went back and got me another 45. Didn't have any problems.
Yep, and finally it worked a few hours ago
And to avoid creating a new topic: I have a generator type 4A, is it worth it to improve with this engineer or I buy a generator 8a first? I have an Anaconda fit for transport but I'd like to fit it for combat, little by little in the future.

You can always tea bag yourself
grab your allocation
wait 10 min
fly out of station and dump max 20t of rare commodity you are collecting
Select one canister (so you can find it again)
fly back to station load up again
fly back out and scoop your dumped cargo
haven't done this for ages so not sure if new C&P might cause issues
No problem in dropping cargo outside the NFZ, But I gave this up when I got a second account back in 01 and learned how to run both at the same time [up]
You'll have to be outside the NFZ to avoid a fine. The problem with that is if you drop the cans too far away from the station, they will be lost from the instance when you return for your next batch.
The other thing to note, is that if you have any of the rare good still in your hold, you are likely to not get a proper allocation. So only buy up to for 20 the first batch.
