Rare vs regular trading: when to switch?

i do 3 mil credit in 1 hour. Rare item com. trade. and i do only dock 2 times. arrival and depart.
by the way.. guys it possible drop 50 rare item on one station, each time u come back. (must follow the market situasion)
I use 20 min pr 1 mil. 3x 20 min =3 mil. a hour.

I stick to my Asp maybe i go for a Pyton later. Asp is multi fleet, i can defend attack and trade 3 mill in one sigle hour. if u like to know my route email me.

Note: this can change my route that i use now, but after a month or 2, i find a new one that can drop from 35-50 rare each time i comeback to them.

Easy answer - when you get bored of doing one thing, do the other.

Personally, I detest trading. I only do it when I need money quick. Otherwise I'm happy exploring, running missions, and generally mucking about doing what I want.

If I'm in my Cobra and I'm feeling lazy to switch to my L6 I just run the rare trades for 1 or 2 rounds... I make a million or so credits and I'm happy and back I go to mucking about again.

If I'm feeling somewhat more determined I'll go get my L6 and do a few rounds of trading and make a million or 2 and stop again, and go back to my Cobra to muck about :)

I was going to say the same thing. If you focus on credits too much the game becomes a job.. All I wanted to do was get a big ship when I started now I just wing it with guys and we go with the flow. We might trade, RES hunt what ever but it becomes more enjoyable.

There is no cost associated with re-fitting ships, you can sell/buy modules as much as you like. So my advice is thus;

Head to a safe sector of space (Empire core is pretty safe), and refit your ship entirely for trading. Find two systems where you can back-and-forth trade for a little bit, then head off to a high-tech system and refit your ship for what you want it for.

My current approach (also in an Asp with 80t cargo space available) is to sit in a "rares cluster" and bounty hunt the nav points. Every time I dock for reloads, repairs or paying off an "oops" I grab whatever rare item the local system has. When my hold is full I move to another cluster that's far enough away to be profitable, sell what's in my hold and start over. It's slower to build the balance than dedicating myself to pure trading but it's fun :)

All of this. I did something similar in a Vulture with 36T. Just gently filled it up, did the loop, did some exploration on the way. A couple of hours of combat/rares and exploration was worth about 1.2MCr, but it was so varied I could do it all day. When THAT got boring, I would drop the Vulture off, jump into my Adder, and head into the stars for a few days.

It's still the part of ED which works perfectly. Varying your activities, switching if you get jaded, and enjoying the whole breadth of the game.

My turning point was the type 7. For me, at 200 tonnes of commodity hauled per run, you can get comparable profits on standard goods at healthy profit margins across one or two short jumps, compared to running rare goods over 140 LY.
