Hi All.
Rare trader here CMDR Ndorrin1 here.
Anybody got any advise on rare trading.
Got myself a nice Type-6 but finding that a lot of the rare stations have very limited supply.
Anyone found any stations that have a large supply of rares, or can anyone advise how long the stations generally take to resupply?
Thanks in advance!
On the long save for that Anaconda!

Rares are always in short supply. That's why they're called "rares." The usual advice is to either a) make a large, circuitous route filling your hold with rares from a bunch of different stations, selling and buying at the same time when optimal; or b) in a Type-6 or bigger, trade normal commodities instead of rares (the decrease in profit per tonne is mitigated by the larger hold and the ability to buy and sell more quickly)

Hi,

As already said.... Rare's are exactly that... Rare.

What size is the T6?

Be worth you spending some time using this http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/ to plan a route or two. I shows you what the Max is of each of the rares, so it'll give you an idea as to if you should hang around for the re-spawn or not, just for the sake of that extra Tonne.

Regards

Here's a list of known rares and the max allocations. Basically you wont get much more than 17 rr 18 except maybe in Altair, and the rate they re spawn is slow.
It depends on your cargo space if it's it's worth it to wait around or is it faster making cash by just taking what is there and leaving. It takes ten minutes for a restock.

With the type 6 you're really pushing the returns on rares, you should be able to make more cash per hour dealing normal commodities.
Cobra is about the biggest ships where rares make the best return, especially since the ship is generally more manoeuvrable than the t6 so you can fly between the systems more effectively.

Just a quick tip: If you have a route planned with 2 or more rares systems within a jump of each other, instead of sitting in a station for 10 minutes waiting for the respawn cycle, travel back and forth between the stations. The rares should have respawned by the time you come back eg: Buy at station A, travel to station B, buy at Station B, fly to station A, buy at station A, rinse, repeat. Hope this helps. :)

All good advice guys. Thank you very much :)
Engadine - the T6 with fully upgraded cargo hold can hold about 100tons, more if you lose you're shields, but then you are running the risk of getting your a** handed to you by pirates.
I've tended to do a circuit of the rare stations I know of, and try to fill the rest of my cargo hold with other goods that will make a small profit between the stations.
I'm thinking of doing the rounds and filling my hold with as many rares as I can, and then just fly as far away as I can to sell for mega bucks, but the risk is that if I travel a long way with a hold full of rares the risk of pirate ganking will be strong with this one. haha.

In my opinion, T6 is borderline for rare trading. Cobra is fine, but T6 has big enough cargo hold to be more effective in normal trading. I mean, it will take you an hour to fill up your holds and another while to go around the galaxy to sell it. If you find some nice three-point trade route that gives about 4500Cr/ton profit, you'll make more money.

The other thing is, it's not always about money, right? If trading bores you, then by all means. Rares are much more fun as you see a fine share of inhabited space and it's altogether more engaging. :)

For me it was a bit frustrating to carry three palms and one leathery egg around in my huge ship. :D

I would add. Cobra is the sweetspot IMO to Rare trading.
I make more doing a local run in a T6 now that I did with my Rare run in the Cobra factoring in time taken to fill hold, then make the 160LY lump vs 10min hops between 2 sites for less cash per each trip but nearly double what I get for 40T of rares in a cobra over roughly the same period of time (let's say an hour)

I still rare trade in my T6 which is at 104t just to break up the slog of normal trading.

I've a number of routes I run and as said, one of them I hop from station to station to allow for the re-spawn. If however it's just a case of having 6t when the Max is 7t or 12/13t for a Max of 14t I will just leave the difference as it's not worth the wait.

If I'm doing a simple 2 cluster run, where I'm collecting from 4/5 stations at one end then making the 160+ jump to the other cluster I'll look to make up the spare cargo space with a "normal" commodity even if this is just making a few 100 or 1000 on them.

The runs are more full circuits where after getting started you soon fill the hold and the benefit is felt once you're on your 2nd lap around.

The Cobra is a good ship for rare runs, but I found only if you're doing the cluster style collect-jump-sell then repeat at the other end.

I'm trading rares in my Asp with 80 tons cargo hold. Takes long to fill up, but the profit round trip (160ly back and forth) is around 2.7 millions, which is nice. I don't make more than one of those runs per day though.

I would probably be faster at making money with my Type 6, but I can't stand routine. Kills my motivation.
