Elite / Frontier Rate My Elite Music!

Well, we've got Elite-inspired art, stories and ideas on this forum. So, how about some music?

I set myself the task of imagining an Elite 4 intro/trailer sequence, and then composing the music that would accompany it.

As it's for an intro/trailer, it explores a range of emotions quite quickly, but I would like to go into more depth on each section eventually. However, I have used a recurring melodic/harmonic theme to tie the piece together.

It is meant to have an traditionally epic feel, but also to point to the future, and at times suggest the vastness of space.

I welcome any comments.

**UPDATE**

I have now also composed a Jjagged Bbanner single. It was my first project of this type, and was very fun. Lots of singing, and i even got the guitar out and dusted it down!

As ever, comments welcomed.

It's cool man, it does feel a little like a piece of ingame music, perhaps for the opening BGM as you are initially intro'd to the game. From a perspective of a piece of music I think I like it more from 2:36 onward as it feels a little more cohesive. The first half is a little 'fluffy' (not ment in an offensive manner) for my liking. After 2:36 it has a bit more 'weight' to it which I really like. In fact I would almost say that they sound like two different tracks of which the second half is superior. A bit more beef to the baseline and a little more 'space' to the violin piece at 3:22 would be nice IMO.

I've never really been a huge fan of choral choirs to be honest - I'm more of an electronica type guy.

Do you mind me asking what you have used to create it in?

EDIT: actually a tune that always made me think of Elite was by a British group called Syntax - The tune was used in the game Driver 3 - it's called Destiny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dTnCeES904

Ableton Live with various orchestral/choral VSTs.

I like both types!
I was brought up as a chorister, so i'll always have a love for choral music. I believe the human voice has certain timbres and an instinctive connection that other instruments can't provide.
But i mainly made electronica/ambient stuff at Uni.

I like to mix up compositions with Ambient and Orchestral music. I think they are great together.

Really impressed with that. Agree with Steve, very good piece of background music.

Ah, I've been meaning to have a look at that - do you find it fairly easy to use?

Yes, but then i do have a fair bit of experience with sequencing/studio techniques, and have used just about every piece of sequencing software in my time.

I reckon most people could get the hang of it if they are reasonably technical and have some grasp of the concepts of sequencing.

I was a DJ for quite a few years back home in New Zealand and have played in a few clubs around London but I've never delved into making music, despite aspiring to it often. I have full respect for people like you who are able to put something together and make it sound so good. Nice work!

I might have to grab a demo copy of Ableton and have a play...

EDIT: I just installed it and have checked out some Youtube vids on it - It looks quite intuative. Very cool software. Do you use any midi triggers or is it all computer based?

EXcellent piece of music Turwhitt.

Listened to it a number of times over the last hour or so.

Do I hear shades of Star Trek TMP/BABYLON 5 at the start?.

look forward to hearing some more.

Really like that Turwhitt :D
Never fail to be impressed by the talents of the posters here!
I too thought Star Trek at the beginning, with shades of the temple music from Baldur's Gate (yes, I used to go in there just to listen to it:eek:) when the voices come in. Thanks for a brilliant contribution!

p.s. Agree with you about electronic+choral both being good: "Dream of Gerontius" is my favourite, but loved the early electronic/prog rock(sorry). I was inspired by your track to go on a wiki hunt of Moog, Mellotron, TONTO etc. Perhaps time for an off-topic "what is your favourite music" thread?

I've never watched ST (except for the old shatner series) or B5, or played Baldur's gate, so any similarities are unintentional.

I'm gonna have to hunt them down now to compare. One of my personal bugbears is that whenever i finish a piece i have this feeling that i've heard it before. The fact is though that by the time you've done a mix, you've probably listened to the melodies 100s of times, so it could just be that it's taken up residence in a memory-related part of your brain.

It was meant as a compliment, I promise! When music software programs came out I remember thinking "how exciting, now I can do the music in my head" and like 99% of others never got round to it. So I admire anyone who actually does it. I've listened to your piece several times now and it has a lovely, "Space" feel to it.
You do the music, Steve does the artwork and Alien the story: who needs Frontier?

Yeah, excatly - the basic melodies and chord progressions will have been done a zillion times before somewhere, sometime but it's the differing combinations and your own personal touch that makes the difference.

Just finished having a brief look at the software - it's hell complex - I have even more respect for what you've done now!!!

Thanks, much appreciated.

I'm currently working on the Jjagged Bbanner single. I've made some lyrics, and have a great backing track. My main problem is that my microphone is poor, so my vocal samples aren't great quality. With all the noise and crackle reduction I'm having to use to process them to a decent state, I am starting to sound somewhat robotic. But perhaps that's not neccesarily a bad thing!
