rating & class of equipment

What does rating and class of equipment mean?

How much better or worser are parts with a class 4, rating F
compared to...
e.g. class 2, rating A ?

Class is restricted by you ships ability to fit it. Class 1 is for smaller ships (Sidewinder) and Class 4 for your larger

Rating is a simple scale with A being the best and I being the worst (I is the lowest I've seen)

Someone did have a picture they'd edited to show what everything on the equipment screen means, but I can't remember where it was.

Check your outfitting screen, each module slot has a class limit associated with it (it's the bottom one of the two numbers next to the letter rating). Think of this as a size limit for the slot, you can only fit a module who's class is less than or equal to that number (no fitting class 7 shield generators on a sidewinder for example, as they only have slots for class 2).

The rating is it's overall efficiency/quality within that class, so a class A is better than a class B, c and so on.

There are other things to think about when upgrading, but that's the basics of class and ratings.

well to be fair we know they're better... but not by how much, there are a LOT of stats on modules, but generally speaking each improved stat is marked with a blue arrow, any worsening of stats is marked with red. Neutral (i.e. no improvement) stays orange.

I couldn't say how much better a rating f is over a g, as the answer is different for every type of module.

Not this bit you didn't :)

You can't make those comparisons though. You could just about make a comparison between a Class 2 and a Class 4, but not even that really as it's dependant on what your ship can use. As Kalchak said as well the different ratings are different between each type of modules as well. About the only stat you could make a fair comparison on is the integrity stat which some items have.

It's almost like saying is a standard R9 280x better than a Toxic 6850 graphics card. Toxic are better than the standard AMD cards, but the R9 is obviously better, however not all computers could fit one.

In many cases, they aren't even comparable, because to get the most out of a class 2 item, you need a small ship; such ships can't use class 4 stuff.

I think it's better to compare the other numbers (mass, power use, damage, etc) of the new thing with the old thing (by pressing the COMPARE button). Blue numbers are positive effects, and red numbers are negative effects. For example, a power unit may provide 2 MW more power, but be 5 tons heavier (reducing jump range). It's up to you if you think it's worth it

Some units improve performance with the same mass, but others give the same performance with lower mass; chosing lower mass and similar performance improves jump range.

Outfitting info needs clarifying

You're right. One of the best upgrades I made when I had my viper was a lighter but more powerful thruster module
However, the outfitting screen could and should give better info on how available modules will perform in the field. Best example from my experience is Sheild banks. I have a cobra. When I was poor I bought a cheap shield bank. It was class one. It sat in a class two slot. I learned for the first time when deploying it I could recharge my shield 3 times before the module ran out of ammo. (Although today I spotted this info tucked away in the fire group setting page. Honestly, come on) Crucially, that info isn't in the 'advert' before you buy. I freed up a class two slot today when I found 16 ton class 4 cargo racks. I got 2 replacing class 4 8 ton racks and removed a class 2 rack that could only hold 4 tons. I now have 16+16 (32)instead of 8+8+4 (20) Class 4 racks can be bigger. Obviously. I decided to get a second Shield bank for the freed up slot. I found a class 2 module. I compared it with my class 1. On paper, it looked worse. Rating B, whereas my existing class 1 was A. It was also a bit heavier. I bought it anyway. Turns out to carry 8 charges that work a treat. I see no disadvantage against the A rated class 1 in the way it recharges. I used the two in tandem and took down my first elite anaconda assassination right out of the outfitters. (It was beautiful. Took down shields, targeted power plant, ramming speed, guns blazing, recharging all the way with the banks, he detonated and I pull a victory roll through the ashes. Class.) I would have been toast with a second A rated class 1 bank. I suppose I could just learn how to fly instead of relying on shield banks, but that's an example of how a bit more pre purchasing Info could help us.
