Newcomer / Intro Raw newbie buying first ship and needs help

Hi all. A friend got me into this game only 2 days ago so forgive my possibly dumb question. I have searched dozens of links but still can’t find my answer anywhere so hoping for some help. I bought a cobra mk111 at the store in Archias Point , Sharur system using ARX. I still have my std issue sidewinder and can’t find a way to use the new Cobra. I’ve read a bit about buying from a base with a shipyard. Howndo I start to use the Cobra mk111?

If you used Arx you must have bought something cosmetic as they cannot be used to buy anything functional within the game.
You need to visit a station in a prosperous system and then select the shipyard from station services you can buy a Cobra III from there, if available, for credits or by part exchanging your Sidewinder.

Yep you probably didn't actually buy the Cobra. Get in your Sidewinder, travel to LHS 3615 and go to Wrangell Port. That seems to be the closest place to buy the Cobra mkIII from where you are, which I assume is Archias Point in Sharur.

It's about 350,000 credits so I hope you've done some mission work to earn those!

Oh dear! It’s quite hard to learn anything and I’ve found myself spending more time than I would like, having to pause and research things but 8 guess that’s the nature of the beast. Thanks for your comments

It is also easy to make what seem like logical assumptions only to find yourself confounded by Elite's "reality". The trick is to learn to actually read what you are letting yourself in for before clicking that button. So ignoring "you do not have a vehicle of this type" (if that is the correct wording) and not noticing that a destination station is 6,397,064 ls from arrival (Hutton Orbital) all have their drawbacks - and there are loads more pitfalls you can fall foul of if you don't pay attention (the most painful it seems is clicking the wrong thing in the rebuy screen).

So don't be put off, the game is well worth persevering with.

Except that is outside the newcomer's zone so @Muddy Diver would lose their permit if they docked there (with enough credits to buy a Cobra III). Mawson Dock in Dromi is the best place for ships and equipment in the noob-zone and the only station there that sells the Cobra MkIII.

Of course! I've been out here so long I forgot about that.

Yes it takes quite a bit of time, depending on how far you want to get into it. I have notebooks filled with early calculations for jumps, trading, DPS, etc and have reduced it somewhat these days thanks to online tools. The good news is that between things like Inara, EDDB, EDSM, and the forums in various places there's a great deal of wisdom that can supplement the in game Codex and make your ED experience very rewarding. And, of course, you can always ask around for help. Have fun with it!

Welcome to ED. Nobody gets rich fast. But plenty of ways to get rich so don't rush it.
Steep learning curve, do the tutorials, Fly missions, ask questions; people are very willing to answer and offer guidance and links to resources you'll need eventually. Focus on your learning first while making credits. Don't be eager to spend at first.
Buy a ship, have twice the value of the ship available.
