I hadn't seen any threads mentioning this headset on here so thought I'd let you know my $0.02. I bought this so that I was ready for the voice comms coming soon (and maybe VoiceAttack), but I hope my experiences will help others.
When using this headset with ED, there is a lack of use of the low frequency channel. Things like the engines, I can hear behind me, but because they are only using the rear channels (with no "sub"), they sound very weak. The same goes for other sounds like when hyperspacing etc.
After some experimentation, I was able to address this completely with Windows settings. Just in case anyone else has this problem, I did the following:
Control Panel->Sound
Double click on 7.1 speakers (which are actually the headphones)
Enhancements-> Bass Management
Click "Settings" and choose a higher crossover (I chose 180hz which is a little high, it should probably be lower). Windows default is 80hz which is much too low for these headphones.
Also:
Control Panel->Sound
Select the 7.1 speakers with a single click
Click on "configure"
On the third page of the wizard, there are options to select "full-range speakers". None should be ticked.
It might be nice to have the sub cut-over (or some sort of bass level enhancement) as an in game audio option.
My thoughts on the actual headset.... well, they are pricey for sure. With the changes noted above, you do get some very nice, undistorted sound. My biggest criticism perhaps (other than price) is that I don't think there is enough separation between the channels. I can tell there is an obvious "3D-ness" to the sound, but it's not quite as immersive as I hoped it would be, especially from reviews of the headset online.
If anyone knows of any windows config that might address that, I'd be very interested to hear it.
