Re: Phosphorus and geological sites

FSS the system - It's a PITA in a inhabited system because there is a lot going on so you might want to nip out of the bubble and have a go somewhere unpopulated

Are you just looking for Phosphorus? You can find that pretty much everywhere... check the mineral content on the system map and drive around in an SRV blowing up rocks

For geol sites, you will need the detailed surface scanner.
For example, you you want to find some specific element like Phosphorus or Selenium, go to https://eddb.io/body and select the element you are trying to find in "Material finder" and put your current system in "Reference system" and click "Find Bodies" button. After that, you can sort the list by concentration of element. Choose the planet and fly there.
As soon as you will be somewhere around the destination planet, stop and use the Detailed Surface Scanner minigame. After that, you will have the geo sites available in Navigation as targets. Select target, fly there, land and mine.

Of course, this is valid only for systems that are already in EDDB.
If you are exploring somewhere in not yet mapped part of the Galaxy, as a first step, you will need to use the FSS and scan the whole system one body after another. After FSS you will see the elements which are present at the planets on the system and their percentages. You will also see if there are some geo sites on planets or not. After that, you will need to fly to the chosen planet and use DSS as described.

  • FSS the System
  • check for notification "Geological {nn}" in the top right Panel of the FSS screen
  • target and fly to the Planet with Geologicals (re-check System Map if needed)
  • from close Range and with DSS mapped to a Fire Group, "fire" the DSS to go into Mapping Screen
  • when in Range, complete the Mapping of Planets with Probes
  • after "Scan Complete", leave DSS Screen
  • you'll now see the Info permanently in the top right HUD about the nearby Planet, Geological Sites will visually show and in the NAV Panel as well
  • Target one and then fly down there
In a series of Images, this is how the process looks like :

Make sure you're in Analysis Mode

Enter FSS ; here I've chosen the C1 Planet as a candidate as Binary Planets fairly close to their Sun (or a parent Gas Giant) are often good candiates
ELITE-GeoMapping2.jpg

And yep, it has 8 Geological Sites according to the FSS
ELITE-GeoMapping4.jpg

Fly towards the Planet now, one needs to approach quite close. For Planets, it's typically well within 0.5Ls
ELITE-GeoMapping5.jpg

Getting closer now - but note the red "Surface Scanner - Out of Range" in the lower left HUD
ELITE-GeoMapping6.jpg

The Surface Scanner HUD element has now become blue, indicating the DSS is now in Range for Probes
ELITE-GeoMapping7.jpg

Open DSS
ELITE-GeoMapping8.jpg

Start firing Probes to Map the Planet
ELITE-GeoMapping9.jpg

For usual Planets, Center, Top, Right, Bottom, Left... that's usually enough, at least with an Engineered DSS
ELITE-GeoMapping10.jpg

Done and complete....
ELITE-GeoMapping11.jpg

Notable Signals are now displayed
ELITE-GeoMapping12.jpg

...and they now show up in the NAV Panel
ELITE-GeoMapping13.jpg

And they can also be visually Targeted if desired
ELITE-GeoMapping14.jpg

Now all that's left to do is to fly down there, deploy the SRV and start harvesting :)

PS.
Be aware that if you fly to a location you've previously Mapped again at a later time, you'll still need a DSS equipped onboard, if you return i.e. in another Ship.
No action needed anymore then, but otherwise (i.e. other Ship with no DSS equipped), the Sites would not show up.

That is Brill thank you. I noticed that with a void Opal hotspot.. it didn't show up when I visited again after removing the dss. Plugged it back in and they show up.

Mrs poorly so I had to switch my noisy computer with 6 large fans off. Im desperate for a gaming laptop now. I could go sit in the kitchen. With so much to do in ED having the game tied to one location is a bit frustrating to say the least. I wonder how my credit score is doing these days :)

There is some weird behavior of DSS when it comes to hotspots. Couple of weeks ago, when I started playing again, I did DSS of some rings. One for Painite mining and another for VO mining. The DSS for VO mining I did in my Python and the DSS for Painite mining I did in my Anaconda. So far, so good.
But when I commited suicide to get back to Bubble for Engineers and after some weeks I returned to Colonia, took the same Anaconda and went for some Painite mining at the same ring (I have bookmark for this), there was no hotspots and it was necessary to do the DSS once again. The hotspots was at the same places, but they was not visible unless I did the deep surface scan.
I tested the same situation with my Python at the place where VO hotspots was and it was the same. I must redo the DSS scan to be able to see the hotspots again.
