Re: Starting my Voyage soon.. Colonia here i come

Good afternoon commanders,

its been a fair while since I was last on here.. have been reading but that is all.
im heading off to colonia soon to meet up with a buddy who resides there. its quite the adventure which im looking forward to so much..
my trusty ship is the DBX with a 68Ly range and im going to be dropping down into the neutron highway. this will be my first time using that..
im going to load up my mission boards with the colonia data delivery missions.

for those of you who have done the colonia run before, how long did it take you and what was your most memorable part of the trip?

Fastest I ever got to Colonia was in one sitting of about 10 hours (no neutron jumps).

Usually takes me about 4 or 5 days of casual plodding though, stopping to see the sights and monkey around.

Most memorable part of the trip, for me, is always arriving at the first station on the way (forget what it's called) and then there's a "briar patch" just after it, with heaps of brown-dwarves for several hundred Ly.
Always makes me glad that I stuck an extra C5 tank in my Annie otherwise finding fuel can get a bit iffy.

Took me a couple weeks, jumping at night, maybe a little in the morning. Was a long time ago, though, back before we could really hit the jump ranges we have nowadays.

Most memorable part was getting very low on fuel and making a lot of small jumps to get to a star to refuel before my tank ticked over.

briar patch? I have not heard of that before. sounds like a no mans land..

With that ship, you could do it in three hours if you don't stop to look at the scenery. You've got a week for the courier missions, so plenty of spare time to look at stuff!

I've done the trip a few times, the most memorable probably being taking the very scenic route there shortly after Jaques was discovered, with the Galactic Nebula Expedition. Lots of fun on that trip, with the most memorable bit being the expedition leader trying to give a speech at one of the meetups but - three times! - not having the comms window open and pressing boost instead. He survived.

Back in the days before map filters, engineered jump ranges, and the fuel rats, the extremely dense brown dwarf layer about 50 LY below Sol and stretching throughout the entire galaxy was well known, and a major navigational hazard for some ships.

Nowadays most explorers fly over, under and even through it without realising it's there ... but if you plot a direct route from Rohini (just above it) to Gandharvi (just below it) you'll end up spending a lot of the journey in it.

Yeah.

It's not a big deal as long as you pay attention to your fuel, keep an eye on the galmap and be prepared to divert to a fuel-star if required. (y)

You just leave the first of the 3 stations between the bubble and Colonia, jump and it'll be a brown dwarf, then another, then another, then another... and if you look at the galmap you see there's a sea of brown dwarves and you'll probably have to deliberately divert to a fuel-star unless you've got enough fuel to make at least 7 or 8 jumps without scooping.

If you are into engineering stuff, not all engineers in Colonia engineer up to level 5. So you might want to unlock and pin what is dear to you in the bubble before you go.
68ly over the neutron highway can be done on 3-4 hours. I jumped my 71ly phantom over the pond in one evening.

Maybe see you on the other side. Save journey!

I'm nearly ready. It's actually kind a frightening in a little way, I'm going to heading off into the unknown and I want to make absolutely sure that I have the right ship to do this in. I'm thinking of going in my python now which currently has 49ly range, just waiting to see my matey can increase that. My dbx is limited to scanning and srv but nothing else, the python can do mining too..i looked at a post on here with a map link to the route but the website no longer exists.

My friend says there's a lot of stuff happening in colonia and I'm eager to be a part of it. I've never been a part of a war effort yet so that is something I want to help him out with.

I am heading out in a couple days myself. Right now I'm torn between taking my AspX or the exploraconda. I have some engineering to do on a couple of ships before I go so I have a little time to decide.
I have a bubble cmdr now so I don't believe my main will be back anytime soon once I get there.
Good luck and safe travels! o7

If you're looking for a good range in a medium ship, the Krait Phantom can really move. I'm clocking 60+ LY on mine, and I'm not on an ultralight loadout.

If you haven't unlocked the Guardian FSD booster, it's worth it.

Indeed.

The Phantom is really the exploration ship, now, for those who don't want something as big as an Annie.

I've got 2 Phantoms.
One's a full-on "vanity build" exploration ship and the other is a "daily-driver".
The exploration ship does 70Ly while the daily-driver still manages 60Ly so it's pretty easy to build a jumpy Phantom that's still a bit fighty too.

If you plan on building any ships once there with over size 4 modules, might want to toss some stuff in storage to transfer out later.

Other than that, take your time and enjoy the scenery, and stop at some outposts along the way for some Power Plant repairs if you're getting close to 80% on it and want to play it safe.

I just got back from that area the other day. Second trip, and took my Phantom (61Ly). When I got there I thought about building a few ships and establishing a 'second home' there. But quickly realized that I would have to unlock even more engineers, and that I wouldn't have a one-stop shopping mart like I do at Jameson. So I came back home. I'm not interested in starting over just to have a second base. Especially when it takes me at least two days to get there. ;)

I flew there about a month ago for the first time.
If you're not in a hurry the trip can be rather fun adventure.

There's one thing about Colonia though (and probably most of the galaxy closer to the core, where stars are more densely packed) that's not in the official advertisements.
I mean, you can hear whispers about it, but reality is more frightening than anything I could've imagined.

For me it was a dealbraker. Prussian Zucht and Ordnung on galaxy scale.
After couple of days I had to turn back and return to those areas of space that are more accommodating for my human perception.

Agree on all points. By chance can you point me to the colonia chart/ map ? I found a link but it led to an extinct page.
