Re: TM Warthog Stick

Re: TM Warthog Stick

Hi,

Im considering buying the WT stick, and pairing it with the x55 throttle (already have pedals). I was just wondering how the stick behaves when used free standing on a desk instead of mounted to whatever, and how stiff it is. I know it's all subjective, but would like feedback on this.

Cheers,

Position is pretty important, in my opinion. Wherever your elbow rests while sitting at your PC, gripping the stick should leave your forearm in a position either perfectly horizontal or slightly below horizontal for long term comfort. And that goes for any stick.

Also, if you're only playing ED take a look at the CH throttle. Position on most of the buttons is better and a lot of the wheel, bobs and switches on the x55 are just extra fluff. Don't need'em.

As long as you have a flat, stable surface that can fit the entire flat base on, you'll be fine. I flew Rise of Flight with all that yanking and banking for quite a while on a desk, with the stock Warthog base, and had no issues with stability.

It's fine. Occasionally it shifts a little bit - less than 2cm - under serious abuse but it isn't going to come flying off the desk or anything. The baseplate is pretty sturdy. I'd be way more worried about the x55 throttle than the Warthog stick if I were you.

I have the stick and throttle and I really can't recommend them highly enough. For the price I paid it honestly feels like I ripped off the seller.

Baseplate also has those bolt holes for a reason. If you really feel the need just go ahead and screw it down and be done with it. :D

Edit: Oh, and the stick weighs what? 7 pounds? It sits solidly on it's own.

Hey,

I already have the X-55. I have to say I use half the switches on the base of the throttle (the lower ones, the ones on the side are awkward to reach). I dont like the stick much. It makes a squeaking noise I cant get rid off, sometimes I can feel the spring click (dont know how to better describe, english not mother tongue), and the hat switches are not good in my opinion. Been playing for over a year now, and think I will for the foreseeable future, so thought Id invest in a better stick. I have a glass desk so cant quite mount it (also not a diy kinda guy).

Ill have a look at the CH stick as well.

Thanks all for your feedback so far.

Cheers,

CH stick is a little lightweight in my opinion. Build quality is great, but that is one that you most likely would want to strap down while you're learning to use it. CH throttle kind of encourages you to handle it lightly so I haven't had any problems with pushing it around.

Exact same set up I have all works well together, cosswinds, x55 and the warthog. I have both the stick and the throttle mounted lower than my desk for comfortable flying (you'll spend a few hours so get comfortable). I would say that although the external build quality of the warthog is far better than than the x55, internaly there isnt actualy much to chose between them my one came with a broken common and badly cast ball & socket moulding's, easy to fix but the warthog customer service is shockingly bad, and after waiting a week and still no reply to number of tickets I took the plunge and stripped it down not to clever inside.

I like the stiffness, but I've used it for four years now, so using anything else feels flimsy to me now. Earlier ones had stiction problems (my first one included - I'm on my second), however they apparently solved that problem as my second one didn't have it.

The base sits well enough, but I usually stay calm and don't start yanking it around when things get hairy - if I get startled (which usually coincides with being drunk), it may lift off the table though.
