Discussion Re-using old phone for Elite Dangerous

o7 Commanders,

After almost seven years, the time has come for me to retire my trusty old Samsung S3. It's still perfectly functional, but far too slow for a phone. I don't really want to throw it away, and was wondering if there any clever things I could do with it (apart from use it as a paper weight). Looking for suggestions and recommendations from my fellow Commanders :)

Much appreciated!

S3 thats kit kat android and chrome web view browser right, and 720p display model, if on console theres a few things you can do, (if on PC you won't need these) so using wifi you can

1 You could try running a ED companion app/site in the web browser, Inara or EDSM or EDDB with the recharge cable connected to it with web browser set to PC site mode...
(If you have a Lap top then thats made useless just use lap top...)
2 If on console and not PC, you can use the " second screen apps" to copy and paste system names into galaxy map... instead of using (pain in the backside) On screen keyboard..
(If you type fast and have USB keyboard then it will be quicker doing it that way, IF on PC again made useless as it has built in C&P functions..)
3 Use the mobile for discord chatting while mains powered whle flying in private groups/wings... (can be better audio than native in game chat. PC version will be better again.)
4 Use it as a standalone music/audio book player for those long game play seasons...
5 Use it as a video player to watch TV/youtube episodes while moving in a long flight in supercrusie...

Wear the S3 out instead of another device...

Another alternative is to use "Macro Deck" software (https://www.macrodeck.org/) which allows you to set up a 3 x 5 grid of buttons on the phone that can perform "key press" actions on PC... Install on PC and phone.

Can be very useful. I've tried LOTS of these type of software button programs for phones and tablets (and have a Stream Deck which is overkill but lovely) but this one is probably the least cost / easiest to setup / most flexible of the ones that support Android and PC.

Set up is not entirely intuitive, but does work... some creativity required and frustration until the connection works (don't try USB - never worked for me!)
