RE: Why isn't Insurance complete enough?

The Insurance save point should be at the end of a station visit, not the start. If you're not going to restore the cash, restoring the cargo purchased should be part of the package, so you don't face a loss of reputation because you won't complete a mission (which is maintained intact). Since the Sidewinder doesn't have a empty mod slot to add equipment (another sticking point- see Star Wars Comment), what was in the cargo hold should be restored to the same 95% level (except for scooped cargo)

Examples of where found elsewhere:
(Early) Eve Online - do an AFK while transiting systems and destroyed by players/pirates, the insurance restored a portion of the cash (based on the policy prepurchased.
X Series (Egosoft) - at least 3 auto saves plus a set number of full saves
Elite Plus (US) plus at least the Gametek Elite - multiple save slots.
Civilization: Beyond Earth - Multiple saves

Star Wars Ep 4/5 - Where did Han hide himself and the others on their first visit to the Death Star (underdeck panels), and what was the name of the shipyard on Hoth that did the work on the Falcon for him. (none - he did it himself)

I know that some will say this ruins the game. I'm not saying make it mandatory for all, but at least have it as an option, so you can lessen the learning curve, and those who want to play the game they remember safely still can.

What I would really love is the option to "pre-pay" the insurance when I buy the ship or equipment, so that I can pay up front and stop worrying about keeping a certain minimum balance in my account in case the worst happens.

Nope, you purchase your insurance with the purchase of your ship and gear. Cargo is not insured.

You are paying the premium up front, whenever you buy a ship or gear. All you pay if you get popped is the excess or deductible.
