Reading the Novels?

I read The Dark Wheel again as its freely available as a PDF on the tinterweb. Last time I read it I was 12, now 42 ;)

Would you say the books are worth reading. Do they five you a vast insight into the game world? Are they tween. Books or whatever? Like all the other books created for video games?

I'm interested in the factions and the history of elite..

I am only a few pages in. My motivation is the same, to have a better context of the universe
