I just got back from watching this. Anyone else seen it?
I liked what they did visually, but I'm not sure about the edits they made to fit the story into the movie. They missed some pretty important points in the book. I still think the best way to consume this story is the audio book narrated by Will Weaton. It's great.

I just saw it last night. I overall liked it. Some of the changes I think were good for pacing, but some felt shoe horned. I really like the change made to the second key.

Even though I love the book for it overall 80's references. I do like they incorporated 90's and 00's pop culture into it. I'd see it again. I saw it in the new AMC Dolby experience theater. That in itself was awesome.

Pretty disappointed.. puzzles were completely different/simplified, they elected to introduce all the characters and turn it into some sort of e.t. (I loved e.t. btw) kiddy adventure. Honestly they didn't have enough time to develop much of anything. The years long thing felt boiled down to a day, really didn't get a sense of scope of it all.

To boot, and yes I know the book references a similar sentiment, but the last little bit rubbed me the wrong way too, It's like "dont play video games too much kids!" As if the fact that the outside world is horrible for many people has changed at all.

It's been a while since I read the book and I actually really liked it. It was only in discussions later that I realised how much had been changed so I guess for me they did a pretty good job of keeping the feel of the thing. In particular I loved the whole 2nd key sequence (the book version never would have worked on film anyway) although there were moments (the bath sequence?) when I thought "really? you're going here?? is this suitable for the younger audience members?" but the humour made it work, Spielberg loves a bit of horror after all. It wasn't extraordinary tho. I'd give it 7.5/10 - worth it just to hear this sound effect again after all these years ...

Saw it last night. Your score is very fair. Certainly much more enjoyable than last weeks trip to see Tomb raider.
