Real space sound behavior optiion.

Hi everyone!

So like the title says, for those that want realism to the max. Is it possible to have an option for sound to behave "space realistically" in the audio options menu.
(maybe you guys tired that already during the games development. was it too hard like that?)

Right now it's semi realistic.

The only 2 things that would need an option for are:
-No sound for ships thrusters that are near by when in space. When in space stations belly however those thrusters should be heard. (i presume there is air so that works)
-No sound effects when your weapon shots hit the target shield and hull. (It's space)

And two last ones though they are more of a change then an option:
-The guns sound like they are almost beside you in the cockpit when shot, especially the Multi-Cannon. The weapons are outside the cockpit even though they are attached to the ship and sound would travel through the ships frame and equipment on it, the weapons don't sound muffled enough when fired to be realistic.
-And the docking to hanger on outposts only would need a similar treatment.

These are just suggestions that would be great to have since every thing else is so very well done.
(minor and quiet irrelevant to more pressing issues, but still)

Cheers and thanks for a great game launch,
Beforcial

Its been a topic of discussion for a long time.
I wouldnt mind at all if the own ships sounds where more muffled, and that incoming hits also sounded more like something travelling through the hull.

The general idea is that all exterior sounds are created by the ships computer to aid the pilots awareness and intuition. But thats not to say it cant be adjusted and tweaked.

The audio of ED is amazing though, realistic or not :)

As far as I know the devs tried realistic sound early on, pre alpha, but came to the conclusion that a lot of the excitement was taken out of the game.
So they came up with the idea that your ships computer simulates the outside sounds and plays them through the cockpit speakers in order to aid the pilots situational awareness.

If you really want realistic space sound then all you have to do is get your ship damaged enough that the cockpit canopy shatters. The cockpit speakers can't work in a vacuum. Of course you will only have a few minutes to "enjoy" the silence before you die of oxygen starvation (time dependent on the grade of your life support module). :)

That excuse works for me, didn't know that the on board computer was the culprit.
It's all right on the money for me now as far as realism is concerned.
Is this mentioned in game?

That is out of the question this game has great sound work, never going to happen.

Yep done all the bad stuff to my ship so far.
-Cockpit canopy shatters in space then died, after failing to destroy target. (in practice tut however)
-Didn't watch my fuel so i ended up stuck in an abandon system, reserves out. The systems shutdown not long after life support offline sitting duck and watching the canopy slowly frosting up while the oxygen counter counts down.
(the only thing missing is to see if there is oxygen in belly of stations if you dock with a shattered canopy.)

Yea if you ever have your cockpit breached it gets a lot more realistic. Its kinda spooky actually.

As far as the stations you enter go there is oxygen in them as far as I can tell. Kept there by the fields at the door I imagine. I base this off of turning off the life support inside one and the atmo timer never starts. I don't think the helmet seals either.

Yeah there is definitely atmosphere in the stations, thats what the plasma field in the entrance is for. If you have a shattered canopy and you get into a station the countdown stops and your remlock helmet unseals.

Surely the guns make noises as although they are outside they are actually attached to the hull and therefore any vibriation created by them will transfer into the interior of the ship ;)
As for shot outside well unless they strike the hull then yes they'd be silent. I agree with FD though, that would make for a very boring game environment in some ways. Watch the film Gravity, those exterior scenes with stuff blowing up and flying about, looks great, and there is tension, but 'exciting' mmmmmm not sure about that. :) Only my opinion though.

No its not mentioned ingame, and to be honest im unsure where (if) its ever mentioned within the lore of Elite. Possibly in the books or through some developer diary.
But its a commonly accepted theory in sci-fi and makes somewhat sense, although in reality modern fighter pilot only hear their own engines/ship systems and not anything outside of their ship (its usually too far away) so exterior audio is mainly just for the excitement.

To be honest, the more i think about it, the only sounds we hear that are highly unrealistic would be other ships (engines, weapons, explosions) and i dont think id care a whole lot if those sounds where removed.
Actually, i think im getting alot more supportive of a realistic audio option!
