I've been thinking about this for some time wondering if it could be applied to other games, NASA's free to play moon base game for example.
Basically the games industry sees more money than the entire worlds space and science budgets.
Let's face it, space travel has not gone as fast as we 'dreamed' it might.
Take for example this plasma rocket system

It's only 'just' comming online and that started in the 70's.
I don't think we should trust government funding to keep the science and technology of space travel at a decent pace. In fact 3rd party commercial companies are started to get involve for a more cheaper alternative to the large government projects.
I believe these companies aren't getting their desired investments or public exposure to help drive their business and concepts forward that would contribute towards the space program foreseeable future forward.
And this is where *you* (or rather us) and Frontier Development can help out.
Through elite dangerous,
"sponsors" - read companies that want exposure, can have a spot-light appearance.
Exposure or information about the company if you will, could be portrayed in may ways; whether it's in the GUI or the electronic billboards at a space station, with , and what that technology brings to the table, (more efficient fuel, better food, etc etc) to the real life space programs.
Giving us an option to micro-invest (crowd funding style)
or share via social media to our circle of friends.
And out of our science fiction dreams of the future where people can fly space ships ,
can we help drive actual science fact into being more closer to the present.
And this doesn't need to apply to "pure" commercial technology, but research institutes and established educators who wish to promote theories, research, education programs, to inform and inspire new generations of scientists and engineers from the player base to MAKE our dreams come true.
