Realistically looking at 2020

So there's been a lot of speculation running rampant about. I think we all need to take a realistic look at what we will most likely get. No space legs isn't coming. And the reason I say that is the server architecture the game is using can barely support ED. In its current form let along transmitting the extra data from ship and station interiors. Second atmospheric landings I'd say yes but no on earth likes. Most likely will have planets like current day Mars. Fleet carriers, probably not coming for the same reason space legs isn't.
The reason I'm speculating for the long duration till the next update is most likely to upgrade the games hardware and the background coding so we might possibly in 2022 or 2023 get space legs or earth like world landings.
That said I don't think that's such a bad thing ED desperately needs better hardware infrastructure, and if it means a small content drought to get it I'm all onboard.

Has there been a lot of speculation?
Space legs is not coming, because the server architecture can't support it? - I'm sorry but what are you basing it on? the server architecture is doing just fine. P2P is not the problem, and the 'extra data' as you call it is not a problem at all.
The amount of data you need to transfer to is nowhere near troublesome.
You do not seem to be basing this around anything other then your broad statement, and you provide absolutely no evidence to back up your claim in that the server hardware is having issues, because last I checked it does not.

Thank god, you scared me there for a minute. At least this is not another one of those "end of useful life in year XXXX" threads! 😁

Wrong and limited by the usual naysaying hyperbole. The current server infrastructure can support SRV's(paraplegic, but still a form of fpv) and 3D avatar movements on various different land terrain. It would currently just be too simplistic like X4's walking without much to do. So time and resources & long term patience is needed to wait for them to work on it for the 2020 updates. The server infrastructure is also being worked on and expanded as evidenced by the new hiring last year for server side work where ED was specifically mentioned. The current occasional server matching disconnects are probably due to the devs working behind the scenes on testing expanding the infrastructure which is beneficial in the long run to 2020. And JWE and PC has already proven FD is quite capable of atmospheric and populated visual environments. The NPC's in the mission boards are already 3D modeled with minute shadowing from their clothes.

Yeah, erm, i think you might not quite understand certain things. Like how static objects don't need transmitting.

Firstly the only thing you need to transmit is your location in the game so other clients can put you where you should be.

All ideas are still on the table but my guess is a BIG jump in the narrative with Thargoid hive ships taking off from planets.

You don't transmit any more data than you currently would. The interiors would be stored on your hard drive, the coordinates of where you are in the game is all that is sent across the network, along with a xml sheet (or some other coding language) that tells the game how to represent what you look like in the game, using assets already stored on your hard drive. This only need to be transmitted once, when you first join a instance with other players.
