Reality Check

About a week ago I logged back on to World of Warcraft for the first time since 2011. From 2011 until 2016 I really hadn’t been playing any games. Elite Dangerous was the first game I’d gotten into since WoW and I have gotten my monies worth out of it. I have played almost 4000 hours and have about 11 billion in assets.

Recently though I’ve been getting frustrated with the game. It’s almost a guarantee now that griefers are going to be hanging around the CG’s and Shinra. Not a big deal for me because for me they’re just a minor annoyance but I feel bad for the guy in his Type 7 who gets blown do bits because some player is bored and just wants to bring misery to other players.

The new engineering sucks for me. It might be a dream for some other players but for what I like to do it ruined the game for me.
Once you hit my level you find more than anything your bored. I’ve owned and engineered every ship Elite has to offer. It hit me this morning while I’m logging between open/solo scanning satellites to get Unexpected Emission Data that this game is boring. I spent the better part of an hour to get three UED’s. The problem is FD has no imagination. There is no story line. They’ve all but forced us to encounter Thargoids, but for what? It has no story! It’s shallow. Simulations don’t need a story, games do.
3.0 Beyond is just more of the same. Look the planets have some more texture, woohoo. Where is the story line? How about some quests that lead to some unique equipment instead of credits to buy the same old equipment.

A new ship woo.

FD built a really great space simulation. And like I said earlier I got my moneys worth playing it. Maybe it’s the engine FD uses that allows it to be a great space simulation but a poor game.
FD remove the grind and add story line. If it’s not possible at least be honest with your players. The company has been caught in so many lies it’s not even funny anymore. The game will ultimately fail because people will reach the same point as me and say “Ok now what?” There is nothing else to do.

I'm really sorry but the notion that a game will "fail" because you are bored with it after ...4000... hours in two years (since 2016) kind of doesn't make any sense to me :3

To me, it sounds like quite an accomplishment if players are spending that much time with it. I myself have about 1300 hours since then and that already surpasses any other game I have ever played.

People play ED for I don't know how many hours, get bored, blame the game.
I'm 1800 hours in and still have loads of fun, must be me then, oh wait, no, I blame the game too.

Take a break for a bit, leave it 6 months to a year and play other games then dust off your flight suit again when some new stuff is added. Thats what I do anyway. Play madly for a few months then take a break and play other stuff. I keep coming back though :)

Every game gets boring if you play it long enough. That's the reality. Pick up competitive knitting for a bit and come back later.

ED is as fun as it ever was. It holds some pretty interesting things in the mix if you make your own goals. The BGS is a good way to get the strategic juices flowing. There are little things you can do to help or hinder factions and groups along the way.

But burnout can rear its ugly head from time to time. I find that taking a break for a week or 2 once in a while can ease that for me. Others might need a little while longer, as in months.

We all come back eventually.

Yup

Story isn't how you add large amounts of content to your game. Story adds 10, maybe 20 hours of new gameplay and then you are back to square one. You need to increase the depth of the game's systems to add any significant amount of content.

Very true actually. When I go back to some of the greatest "story" games I've played (Bioshock series, Portal series, Half-life series) and look at my Steam playtime it's utterly laughable compared to Elite (several tens of hours as opposed to the 1600+ that I have with ED).

And, exactly, is that accomplished?

I've posted a means to address this in the Suggestions forum, though it's lost it's front-page status, and some folks get twitchy if I link to it, so I'd suggest reading it over there.

The long and short of it is - it's going to take some Story to reach depth. Not hand-held, go-here-do-that, but some genuine, figure-it-out using what we have to make it work, and it can work, and would be a beautiful thing.

Jeezus...4000 hours? I hope you’re bored. Go for a hike, and take a fly-rod.

Of course nobody knows your situation that allows such time commitments, but there’s a lot of games out there. Try something new and wait for new updates.

#1: You are satisfied with your transaction between you and FD.
#2: You are frustrated, but it's no big deal.
#3: There are levels in ED? Do you mean like Trade/Combat/Exploration ranks? Or something different? I have not once gotten a "level up" in Elite. I knew I was missing something...
#4: You want imagination, but then complain there is no story? When I want my kids to use their imagination, I don't spoon feed them a story... this seems like an oxymoron...
#5: You are sold this is a simulation, but then want it to be a game? Is it a sim or a game to you? You called it a great sim, said sims don't need story, but previously complained it needed a story... I'm probably as confused as you are...
#6: Grind is what you make of it. This is a completely subjective area of conversation.
#7: What has FD lied about? They hardly even say anything before it is happening, and I assume they do this so that they are not accused of lying when things don't work out their way.

In conclusion, you have spent an equivalent amount of time as somebody who works a full time job for 2 years (40 hours a week), playing a "sim" that you enjoyed. You are bored with it now, and are moving on. Cool. Enjoy the next game that brings you 4000 hours of joy.

I play 4000hs myself too and im very far away for bean bored about flying my ships across the milky way. :)
i feel sorry for u. mayby u grind too much.
Im far way to have every ship modded on engeniers. just a couple. only small ships, my beloved smugler cobra MK3 and explorer ASP, a Fighter FDL, and multi conda.

Might I suggest OP that its you that needs the reality check.

You've played 4k hours of the game and its taken you that long to figure out that to make it more interesting for you that a campaign/story is required.

4000 hours? 11 billion assets? And I'm supposed to just believe that? Sounds more like posing to give that whine more credentials.
