Don't forget to backup your save file (control bindings)!

Often a big update can mean losing all your custom control bindings, which can get lost / reset to defaults. If you've made a lot of changes, back them up to USB or the PSN cloud, to redownload later.
Yes your commander data is on FDev's servers, but your local save has bindings.

To save:
  • go to XMB
  • Settings
  • Application Saved Data Management
  • Saved Data in System Storage
  • Upload to Online Storage (or Copy to USB)
  • find Elite: Dangerous
  • select "Game Configuration Settings"
  • Upload
  • overwrite if needed

(to recover, similar steps, but got to "Saved Data in Online Storage" -> "Download to System Storage")

This is ridiculous. It still happens?
It did for me in the very last update, but in one of this years ones, it wiped them again.

Good tip, i have mine to auto backup so my file uploaded as soon as i quit the game.
I do not have auto enabled, as what could potentially happen is:
  • you take the update
  • bindings wiped
  • you quit due to real life
  • it uploads new save file with wiped bindings

Then you have nothing to restore from. Hence why I use manual on PS4.
