Really lost

Hey guys, I've sunk about 5 hours into this game and I'm at a complete loss as to how to play, I fly around to stations but I can't really find any missions and as far as I can tell my lasers can't really kill anything and each time I get into a fight I die. How are you meant to find your feet in this game?

Depending on what ship you're using, what you're fighting against, and if you are using module targeting.

If you want to fight in the sidewinder to start I recommend dropping in to your local nav beacon and picking the smallest WANTED targets.

Npc ships will help out so it's safe enough. Fairly straightforward starter monies

Compromised nav beacon means no police response so much more dangerous.

Fly safe. Shields dying means run away (until later)

Find a Low Resource Extraction Site follow the System Security and SCAN then shoot at whatever they're shooting at (confirm they are wanted first or the bounties will pile on your head). This will easily start you off with some quick income, a few million (5-10) in a few hours (2-4). Take your time, watch your target, even wait for system security to bring down shields and or even bring down hull to ~50% then fire once or twice every few seconds. This will keep threat away from you and still allow you to claim bounties for the kills. Do NOT die before you turn in bounties, this process can be a bit slow, but once you get into a Vulture you can handle things like pythons on your own. As far as mission running, wait. Missions kinda suck right now due to bad writers and people with bad ideas on the development team, not only that, most missions are locked behind ranking and reputation requirements, meaning you should be at least friendly but preferably allied with your local factions and Federation/Empire/Alliance where ever you're running missions out of and get a few ranks in both trading and combat, this will allow more missions to pop up when you dock at stations. Bounty hunting will provide both rank (combat) and reputation for local/galactic factions while also dumping money in your pockets, which in turn, opens more missions for you, either way, for missions I recommend a well fit ASP or Python before making it a primary play style (and or grinding military rank).

You'll have to start by trading. On the Galaxy Map look a little to the left and up from LHS 3447. There's a system <sorry, can't remember the name> that sells cheap Food Cartridges and pays a lot for Aluminium. Down from there are a couple of systems that are desperate for food and sell cheap aluminium. I eventually made 1000cr per run.

Dump your scanner for more cargo space. You won't really need the scanner until you have a bigger ship.
Fit a fuel scoop early. It greatly increases your travel range (but remember some stars can't be scooped).
Replace your fixed Pulse lasers with gimballed ones as soon as you can afford them - you'll win more fights and lasers don't use up expensive ammo.
Upgrade your modules from E type to D type to start with. D type have the same capabilities as E type, but weigh a lot less, so your jump range and speed increases. You can upgrade to better modules later, power systems first.

Do the single player combat training missions from the launcher while you get the hang of it.

Once you've got a feel for dogfighting drop into a nav beacon and kill-steal from ongoing fights. Watch for lasers being fired get within a few kilometers and target each ship in turn to find the one that's marked as wanted. Don't engage wings (yet) and be really careful not to hit any ship that isn't marked wanted. When a wanted ship is near death open fire on it (from as far away as you can 3 kilometer weapon range) and as long as you the only player present you will get the bounty.

If you follow the police ships you might be able to pinch the bounties on some wanted anaconda's 2 or 3 of those and you'll be buying a shiny new ship (the DBS and viper are nice and quite cheap).

This thread is really good for hints and tips : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=146118

If you want PM me your CMDR details and I'll fly escort (real life permitting), I'm happy to cripple wanted ships for you to finish or we could wing up and share bounties.

Don't do combat if you are in a beginner sidewinder, take some Currier missions and smuggler missions to begin with.

Keep away from missions for now. You need to understand the game a lot more before you start on them. They'll only get you in trouble one way or another. Trading and mining is also a waste of time and effort until you have a ship that can make it worthwhile. IMHO, the quickest and safest way to make money is bounty hunting. It sounds dangerous, but isn't provided you're sensible about it. You should be able to make at least a couple of million in an evening. The best place to start is a low intensity resource extraction site, like the guy said above. You can go to one and just watch what happens. Nobody will shoot you if you just watch.

have a look at the Youtube video "Sidewinder to Anaconda in 24 hrs"

This one and the others in his series are also very good:
