Okay, this is just plain annoying. A fundamental error. Spawned in a random system in a stock sidewinder (no Eagle yet?) with 100 credits, so far so good. Sadly a grand total of zero missions are available to me because 'the faction doesn't trust you enough'. Moreover, I have none of the data for any of the neighbouring star systems either, so if I purchase any cargo I am just guessing whether or not it will return a profit at the next place I visit. Seriously, is this supposed to be fun!?!

Wait 5 minutes for the mission board to refresh. It changes every 5 minutes from the hour.
Also, depending on the system there might be more than one station with a mission board. You can even sometimes find two stations in one system that trade with each other.

It's not fanboy, it's true .... go scan the nearest systems and sell the data. 20K in half an hour and buys you faction reputation if you sell it all to the same station you'll start getting missions.

FDev spent a great deal of work on missions. Its kind of ridiculous if you spawn in a system with no missions available.
You can just restart the game if you're not happy with your starting system. Options/clear save.
That is exactly what happened to me, I suppose it could be a problem for a new player that doesn't know that the board refreshes or that other stations might have missions. That said there was no need for him to start insulting people when they post valid helpful replies.
No, it's actually far worse than that, it's beyond utterly and completely ridiculous. Not only did I spawn in station with no missions available, I did exactly what the fanboys on here posted, safe in the knowledge that it was fanaboyism, but hell let's give it a go. Anyway, flew around for a bit, completely aimlessly, went to a new system scanned a star... And wow! Unidentified signal source! Let's check that out... So flew over, and found barrels of 'trade data' (data doesn't even come in barrels in the 21st century, they mus have really poor hard drives in the future!) So, scooped it up until my cargo bay was full, and jetted off to the nearest space station. Arrive, wait around for about 10 minutes constantly being denied docking, then get scanned and handed a 6000 credit fine for illegal cargo... Really, really big design flaw if this is the starting experience. Had been a massive fan up until now...
Watch some tutorials on YouTube. This isn't a game that holds your hand and tells you how to play it. Be prepared to spend literally hours working on controls and learning how to play it.
That's how the game is. Remember it's still not the full release date so you *are* playing beta regardless of what Frontier wants to call it.

Listen, I've been playing this game with no problem whatsover for some time now (since BETA 2), I'm NOT (underline that several times please in red,) a new player, I'm quite capable of doing any of the roles in the game.
Well quit whining and go do them. Go delete your save and START AGAIN.
Done that, three times. Now I've spawned in a system which actually has two missions available, but oh no "server connection failed" in SOLO for goodness sake (apparently 3g on a train is better than fibreoptic broadband!). Oh and don't bother to post up your stock "it's a BET.... GAMM.... Pre-release thingy!?!?" The FACT is this is product we've paid for.
