Really worried about pre-themed rides.

On one hand, the livestream calmed me down quite a bit. It certainly seems like they heard us and will make sure the game has more than it's fair share of generic rides. This is stellar and so exciting.

On the other hand - I also got the impression from them that "some rides are going to have theming", and "things like the sky aces have minimal theming", to be used as centerpieces.
In reality a ride with any level of theming like that is restricted and can't be used wherever you want to make it fit in. I could color the skyscraper in the middle of the sky aces brown and yellow, it still won't fit a western theme or a jungle theme.

It's great to hear the devs are hearing us though!

Well "Steampunk" is a thing, and pretty sure that there were red brick built buildings in the late1800s... In the end I guess it's just a matter of what flavor or western you're going for... (Though perhaps a "Tornado" themed variant of the Sky Aces where you ride around in flying canoes/or logs or cows or something and the skyscraper is made to look like a funnel cloud? Would that be more generic looking?)

No, that's themed as well. Just to throw a couple of examples off the top of my head If I have a sky aces ride I want to be able to plop it in a jungle environment to have it be about a jungle crash landing, a city enironment to have it be about "airport madness", a 1930's theme to have it be about air battles, a fantasy theme to have it be about exploring, etc. etc.
...or just to put it in a generic ol' regular park the kind of which you see all over the world for a "hey this is an amusement park and we just bought a flying aces ride" theme.

Also, there's a big difference between western or steampunk. Many parks have a western theme I've yet to hear of one that has a steampunk theme. I don't want to feel forced by the game to create a steampunk theme if that's not what I was going for.

Additional themes aren't the answer here. The answer (I feel) would be just the basic themeless version of the ride. I mean, I don't think it looks ugly or anything. It does have decorative touches, they just don't limit what you can do with the ride theming wise the way a skyscraper does.

Honestly I would much rather have heavily themed design for each theme they release to us so taking Sky Ace as an example. We have a drop down theme menu where you can select which one you want based on the themed area you are placing it.

So Sky Ace would have the below options for instance and each one named something different:

  • Frontier - Generic
  • Captain Jack - Pirate - Sailing Ships with waves and 19th century stone lighthouse like in a pirate port in middle
  • Billy The Kid - Western - Horse & Carriage with a saloon or those tin water towers in middle
  • Fantasia Fantasy - Fantasy - Giant Butterflies with the fairy in the middle
  • Rocketeer - Sci-Fi - Space rockets with a planet or space station in the middle
  • Sky Ace - 1930's New York - Bi-planes with the skyscraper in the middle (as is really)

Those are the sorts of things I would like to see to be honest. It is a lot of work but if they really want to flesh out the themes and really offer us something that really captures the best of what makes theme parks so mesmerising then this is the way to do it.

Well of course that would be ideal, I don't think anyone is saying it isn't, but here's the thing... Modeling takes time.
Even if they built the "skeleton" of the ride first and just added different themed bits to it, this would still take up approximately the same amount of time as making, I would assume, 3-4 different rides.
Modeling a pirate ship takes time. Modeling a fairy takes up time. Modeling a horse and carraige takes a heck of a lot of time. Then you have to make sure they work well and the guest loading/exiting animations work for them, incorporate them into the code, fix bugs for each seperately, etc.

And I don't know about you but I'd rather have a game with 50 different rides, all or most of which are generic themed and can be themed however we want by adding stuff to their environment, than have a game with only 15 rides avaliable in a multitude of premade themes.

The problem with your argument is the assertion that the 'generic' version is somehow neutral and thereby universal. I just had a look at the picture you provided, it is far from generic. It still has chunky rotor blades, a heavy metal spike within the centre and so forth. It looks like what it is, a carnival ride. Such a product would stick out like a sore thumb in particular themed areas, regardless of theming or not. It certainly would look off in a western or jurassic theme. I happen to agree with the designers on this one, certain rides without some theming look off and are just metal poles.

I think the best we can hope for is, further down the line, additional themed versions of the same ride. I certainly don't want to be placing loads of carnival-esque rides into my park, it would look really odd.

Best,
R.

Oh yeah I completely understand that. This is honestly though why I am hoping we actually only have say 4 themes in the game upon release so they do them justice and release other theme packs DLC. If they offer them paid for DLC in the future where you get building pieces but also additional themes for the current rides then I would be happy to pay tbh.

It is completely a balance and I don't believe that what I stated above will happen for current release but I am more just really showing and making conversation about what we have, what we will have and also why we may not have the options we hope to have.

The coolest thing would be to have a system close to Sim City 5's way to deal with facility buildings. You build it and then you can edit it with adding things on it.
Imagine, place a general attraction and then you edit and add themed details on it. From a range of different stuff to choose from. [happy]

I thought, that several of us suggested this option earlier on in this thread as well.
