Rear mirror

Whats in my back? Look in the rear mirror. Placement? To be switched on or off under the Info Panel.

Kudos to CMDR Maylor Rom

The idea was around since at least closed beta. Probably even longer, i just can't confirm personally. Unfortunately it won't ever happen for technical reasons. I don't have the developer post at hand any more, but i am sure that somebody curious enough can find it in a few hours.

The posting was that they actually experimented with a rear camera. Unfortunately the cobra engine doen't support this well. Rendering two views resulted in massive reduction of the games framerate. They thus abandoned this.

So unfortunately technical reasons prevent us from ever getting this feature. :(

Just go easy on the throttle whilst mining - you should have 4 pips to sys and 2 to wep anyway to stop the collector limpets damaging your shield strength...

swicthable views were in '84 Elite (rear and side) which would sort out the not having to render multiple views. Never got the hang of firing rear laser in that game..

Actually there was a very primitive trick. When you switched to a side or rear view, you also turned the joystick in your hand the same way. Worked best with a joystick like the competition pro, which was a round k-n-o-b on top and not shaped to the hand.

(Edit: What's so bad about the word k-n-o-b that the forum censors it? )

Welcome to my world. I created a control console where the FSS tuning device was a thing that one turned. It works well; talking about it, less so.
It's censored because it is slang for male genitalia and hence a popular insult.
There's less intrusive ways around it, I used an accented letter, but one is bending the rules in doing so. Sidestepping censorship is against the T&Cs and is usually treated harshly. It's far better to use an alternative word if one exists. In your case you could say "ball", which is probably safe. However using uncensored words to avoid the spirit of censorship is also against the T&Cs. So, for example, saying your joystick had a ball on the end is safe. Using the plural as an expletive would be punished.

Thanks. And no, I don't plan to work against T&C, I just was utterly surprised that such a harmless word would be censored. I guess yes, I can believe that the word is used in slang like that. I just wasn't aware of that.

Edit: Damn you! Things fall into place now. In my youth I read the localized version of Terry Pratched. There was the reference of an oh-so-dirty song in them, which I never got and totally forgot about. Now with this info at hand, I suddenly know why it was considered dirty... yay! :D

I considered refering to that ditty as something that probably got too close to be safe.

Thanks for sharing!

Interestingly, I spontanously thought "Now that would be a challenge for coders in deed.", and wondered whether the engine manages that demand.

I imagined that VERY nice for..... come closer.... come closer.... wee bit closer.... YES!!!!....plop plop plop.....dropping mines. :)
