Reason for ranks

Does anyone have any other reason to grind out ranks for the fed navy or Empire other than a few permits (Not aware I've ever used any of them but I'm not saying they're useless) or ships?

I just think it would be good to have rank required missions in control systems. Missions that make naval service worthwhile and interesting. An add on too this could be attaching yourself to a capital ship and taking on missions from them as they jump from system to system.

Capital ships at the minute seem to be nothing more than scenery you can't interact with unless they're ushering you to the rebuy screen when you drop out too close.

FD are all about creating your own story but they haven't really offered any routes to do this (aside from space trucker, miner or bounty hunter)

Michael Brookes once spoke about the plans to introduce some real military careers to the game that would revamp the rank system, but sadly I haven't heard anything about it since he left as executive producer of the game.

The military career path is seriously under-developed. In Frontier you could actually have something getting close to a proper career. There were specific missions such as bombing, photographing bases etc. You could win medals (and we all love a medal) for bravery and service and all sorts. This side of ED needs a big overhaul in my humble opinion. I gave up on the military when I got promoted for ferrying a couple of tonnes of grain around!

Currently, the only reason to grind ranks is for access to ships and to unlock permit-locked systems. Sad that it's still true after all this time.

These permits are really nothing worth, some of these systems are in war...so what's the advantage of getting a permit for something like that???
Like sol, what is wrong with it? Everything, it should be a non violent space just like all the other "permit" systems but there is just no difference.
I expected more of these permit systems, a shame because they would be a great help for people who want peace and just travel/work.

I somehow understand, but as in RL transporting goods is as if not more important than shooting, no ammo or food/meds = no soldiers/bad soldiers or dying soldiers...been there in RL,no ammo/no food for day's while your enemy has all.

I'm a Lt Commander in the Fednav and means i can buy a Gunship and access a few locked systems. Other than that there's no reason at all to keep grinding it out. Navy missions can be decent if you wait around for a while but overall it's utterly pointless. Even the Fed capital ships open up on you same as anyone else. Surly by the time you reach Lt Commander it should trigger some mechanic to avoid this. After all your a middle rank to highish rank by then so the warnings you recieve can completely destroy the immersion which FD strive towards.

Real Navy's conduct all kinds of ops that arnt combat related, from escort duties in piracy regions to disaster relief. We already know that Farraguts are carrier capable (I think it's something like 10 courvettes and a load of FDS/FGS so use them for the career path

Ships and systems.

I don’t want their ships.
The only reason I have Fed Rank was to take a permit locked System.
