Who knows? Nobody has any idea of whether their actions are having any effect on the supposedly "dynamic" game universe; lots of speculation, no way to actually tell if FD aren't just flipping a coin to decide which faction is winning.
Simulating an entire galaxy down to the atomic level is great and all; but if the system is opaque to the players, it adds precisely nothing to their experience and you might as well just have faked it and made it 'feel' like their actions have consequences (which, for all we know, is what has actually been done).
I dislike being critical because it's a great game and FD are doing a sterling job getting fixes out, but when you watch someone/something you care about repeatedly (and avoidably) shooting themselves in the foot, you start to feel like you have to say something.
