Reboot and shields

So, today during some PvP I thought I'd try the "reboot" function to regain 50% shields. The ship did its thing while I held down Flight Assist OFF to keep my speed up. When the reboot was done I got a message that due to the ship speed, the shields could not be reset. I guess you need to be stopped.

Who's the crybaby who put THAT restriction into the game?

mutter....should be fired....mutter

It was always a bit silly, even if it is handy.

I mean, if your shield generator has the energy stored somewhere to bring them back up to 50% immediately, why did they go down in the first place, rather than dumping that energy into the shield before they break?

It makes no sense.

*EDIT*

Gotta say, it's nice to find all these little tweaks though.
My personal favorite is the ability to delete a bookmark on the gal-map directly.
That is sooooo nice. [up]

Here's a video showing exactly what happens.

TL;DR: You need to be stopped for the shields to reform to 50% if you use the reboot method. (Even though all motion is relative, and from literally an infinite number of frames of reference the ship is stopped. Sad!)

You don't have to be stopped, the ship can drift at low speed whilst rebooting the shields. 50 m/s is the limit during reboot, this is to prevent cmdrs from boosting whilst restarting shields.

Gee, I wonder why your ship isn't allowed to be moving fast with respect to your instance's origin point? (Yes, apparently you failed secondary school physics). Could it possibly be because restoring shields in combat is not its intended purpose? Gee, I dunno, but I reckon with enough whinging we might find the answer!

See post #2, then get back to us when you've comprehendized it.

It was added during beta to prevent people from doing exactly what you tried - restarting shields mid-fight. Because allowing it did not look like a good idea. So simply gameplay reason.

Have to be moving below 50m/s for it work.

Consider yourself lucky, if myself and the other naysayers had our way, reboot repair wouldn't ever restore shields.

Flight Assist Off while doing a Reboot? Now why didn't I think of that? That's why I like this game, you learn something new everyday.

I comprehend it perfectly well, whatever you think the feature should do is irrelevant. It doesn't matter that logically, feature x should do y. What matters is that if feature x did y, it would be unbalanced. I know it's convenient to use mah immersion as a reason to ignore reality, but at some point you ought to give up the facade; I'm sure you are perfectly capable of understanding why being able to reboot your shields whilst moving might make taking such action rather easy, so stop feigning wilful ignorance.

To be honest, why should it? I mean logically as our fine pvpers here pointed out, it makes no sense! ;)

Flight assist is always off during the reboot by virtue of your thrusters shutting down.

I'm also pretty sure that the speed restriction was mentioned in the notes for the patch that brought it in a year or so ago.

Brought to you by the people who can't hit a slow-moving disabled target? :D

Losing thrusters doesn't disable flight assist. Some thruster malfunctions temporarily remove stabilization, but actually having them lose power, or shutting them off, will cause FA to decelerate you and freeze you in place. This applies during reboot repair too.

It seems like applying the OP's unfaltering logic has produced a lot of nonsense. I was just keeping in theme with the topic =)

The speed restriction makes sense as a balancing factor, even if it's inexplicable with respect to the game world.
